POSITION DESCRIPTION Title: Archives/Museum Clerk – Part time Department: Fayette Public Library-Fayette Heritage Museum/Archives GENERAL PURPOSE Staff the Archives Reading room and provide patron service. Perform related clerical work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Work under the close supervision of the Director. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None generally ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES-Museum/Archives 1. Collection Access Restrict access to archives vault and object collections to staff only. Keep reading room, vault, and object storage areas organized. Assist patrons in accessing information and materials within the collections. Assist patrons in the operation of equipment; i.e. microfilm reader/printers, copiers, archives research computers, etc. Respond to queries received by telephone, mail, and/or Internet. 2. Collection Management Assist with accessioning, cataloging, labeling, and storage of collections. 3. Collection Care & Conservation Monitor collection security and environmental control in the vault, exhibit galleries and object storage areas. Monitor condition of storage containers and labeling. Maintain filing systems for various material types. Assist with routine maintenance of collections. 4. Other Duties Assist with preparation, implementation, and maintenance of exhibits. Conduct exhibit tours when requested. Assist customers in the Gift Shop. Assist Library staff in the performance of their duties as required. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 2 Knowledge: Knowledge and interest in Fayette County history; knowledge of library, museum, and archives functions, policies, procedures and practices; knowledge of exhibition planning and organization; knowledge of library classification and cataloging systems; knowledge of Microsoft Office; knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Skills: Skill in recording data; skill in written and verbal communication; skill in making simple arithmetic calculations; skill in proofreading materials to ensure accuracy; skill in the use of listed tools and equipment. Abilities: Ability to operate moderately complex computer systems; ability to organize data; ability to develop and maintain filing systems; ability to follow verbal and written directions; ability to communicate effectively with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to make effective use of time; ability to consistently apply attention to detail; ability to research materials in library setting; ability to identify needs of patrons and the most effective method of response and assistance; ability to adapt to routine repetitive activities; ability to perform multiple tasks within a short period of time. Education: High school graduate or GED; some college-level coursework is preferred. Experience: General clerical experience which involved providing services and/or information to the public. Experience conducting historical and genealogy research is preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Valid state driver’s license or ability to obtain one. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Telephone systems; personal computers using word processing, graphic, and database management software; Internet and public access computer networks; computer printers & scanners; copy machine; microform readerprinters; fax machine; calculator; cash register; paper cutters and shredders; staplers; glue guns.
