MOORE, EDITOR FEBRUARY MEETING Please join the Women Lawyers Association for lunch on Thursday, February 13, 2014, when our featured speaker will be Jennifer A. Moore. Ms. Moore serves as Board Chair of Emerge Kentucky, which is an organization that identifies, trains and encourages women to run for office, get elected and to seek higher office. Emerge Kentucky is part of a national network currently working in 14 states. Its goal is to increase the number of Democratic women in public office. Ms. Moore will discuss the work and initiatives of this organization. The Women Lawyers Association of Jefferson County meets at the Bristol Bar & Grille Downtown, 614 West Main Street. The buffet style luncheon begins at 11:45 A.M. and costs $16.00. Guests are always welcome. ANNOUNCEMENTS/COMMUNITY OUTREACH: 1. 27th Anniversary Celebration of Service & Survival – congrats to board member, Phyllis Florman who is being honored this year! Honoring the 2014 Women of Distinction and the 3rd Annual Joan E. Thomas Lifetime Achievement Winner on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Louisville Downtown Marriott. At our annual Celebration of Service & Survival, The Center for Women and Families pays tribute to five Women of Distinction who have spent their time and talents advocating for women and girls in Kentuckiana. 2 FEBRUARY BOARD MEETING The next board meeting will be Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 5 p.m., at the Bristol Bar & Grill Downtown, 614 West Main Street. If you have any issue that you want the WLA Board to address, you are welcome to attend and/or contact us. The March board meeting will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2014. WLA MEMBERSHIP Founded in 1961 by fifteen women attorneys, the mission of the WLA is to provide a forum for women attorneys, to promote the legal profession in Jefferson County, and to offer information about the profession and public services to the community at large. WLA has a current membership of about 250 judges, attorneys, and law students. Luncheon meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, featuring speakers on current issues, spotlight charities, and promotion of WLA’s activities and community causes. WLA sponsors an annual accredited Ethics CLE program, provides a major forum for judicial candidates, and contributes to local causes and charities. WLA members represent the broad spectrum of legal practice from government and corporate attorneys to those in private practice and public interest work.
