HLTH 1000 Wellness Passport Calendar of Events – Fall 2010 You are required to attend two (2) Wellness Passport events this semester, one of which MUST be a “Premier Passport Event”. You may choose to attend two premier events; however you may only attend one (1) regular passport event. Be sure to check back on a regular basis for programs that have been added. Premier Passport Events October 25: True Life at ECU – Halloween Edition, 4pm – 5pm, Hendrix Theater – Participants will hear true stories of student experiences during Halloween at ECU. Staff from the Center for Counseling and Student Development, Campus Wellness, and Legal Services will be on hand to discuss various consequences of partying too hard on Halloween. November 3: Operation Body Beautiful by Caitlin Boyle, 5p-6p, Hendrix Theater: Tired of watching people pick themselves apart in front of the mirror, 26 year old healthy living blogger Caitlin Boyle scribbled a note on a scrap piece of paper: “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!” and slapped it on the mirror of a public bathroom. With this one small act, she kick-started a movement known as Operation Beautiful. This energetic and interactive presentation will discuss topics of body image, fat talk, negative self talk, photoshopping and false imagery, and self-esteem for both males and females. Caitlin has been featured on the Today Show and the Oprah Winfrey Network, so this is definitely a program you don’t want to miss! November 9: Showing of “The Cure”, 6pm – 8pm, Hendrix Theater: This movie features Dexter, age 11, who acquired AIDS from a blood transfusion, and his next door neighbor Eric, a little older and much bigger, who have become best friends. Eric also becomes closer to Dexter's mother than to his own, who is neglectful and bigoted and forbids their friendship upon learning of it. When they read that a doctor in distant New Orleans claims to have found a cure for AIDS, the boys leave home on their own, planning to float down the Mississippi river and find him. November 15: Wellness Passport VIP Presents: “Half the Man, Twice the Man” featuring Bill Germanakos, 8pm, Hendrix Theater – This program will feature Bill Germanakos, the winner of the fourth season of the hit reality television series, “The Biggest Loser”. Come hear his inspiring and motivating story…you don’t want to miss it! Program will begin promptly at 8pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. November 17: Breaking the Silence: HIV/AIDS Awareness, 4pm – 5:30pm, Hendrix Theater – The program will feature a guest speaker living with HIV. Come out and hear their story about how HIV can affect someone’s life. November 18: The MAN Panel, 4pm – 5pm, Hendrix Theater: Do you have questions for men about their views on love, sex, or romance? If so, then here’s your opportunity to ask! These three guys will answer all your questions with 100% honesty. If you want to find out what he’s really thinking, then this is the program for you! October October 5: Why So Blue? 7:22pm, Bate 1007: College life can be crazy at times! A successful college experience is determined by how well you adjust to the new stressors it can bring. Come learn how to optimize your mental health and recognize the signs when you need to reach out for help. Program will begin on time— credit will not be given to students arriving late. October 6: Peace.love.pirates.cure Cancer Awareness Fair, 10am – 2pm, Student Recreation Center – Peace.love.pirates.cure is a cancer awareness event designed to raise awareness about all types of cancer. Booths will be set up in a health fair setting and participants can come anytime between 10am and 2pm to visit the booths in order to receive a stamp. October 19: Kanyini: An Aboriginal Perspective on Life, 3:30pm – 5pm, Hendrix Theater – This program will feature a film and presentation by Bob Randall, one of the few remaining voices from the world’s oldest living culture. Participants will learn about various aspects of the aboriginal culture, including family systems and relationships. Program will begin promptly at 3:30pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. October 20: Student Health Center Tour, 3pm, Student Health Service Multipurpose Room – Participants will learn more about programs and services offered by ECU Student Health Service. Tour will begin on time— credit will not be given to students arriving late. October 20: Breast Cancer Awareness, 6:00pm-7:30pm, Mendenhall Great Room 3 – Come to this informative program to learn more about breast cancer risk factors, screening, and prevention. October 25: Little Horatio – Speaking Out Against Domestic Violence, 6:30pm, Hendrix Theater – Come out to this informative program and meet Little Horatio, the hero who helped stop the cycle of abuse. This program will increase your awareness of domestic violence and relationship violence and promote safety and resources to students. Program will begin promptly at 6:30pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. October 26: Code of Conduct Week Presents: Dr. Jeff Belkora, 5:00pm, Hendrix Theater – In this program, Dr. Jeff Belkora will be discussing “The Science of Smart Decisions”. In this discussion, he will be talking about how our decisions affect our lives and the lives of others. Program will begin promptly at 5pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. October 26: Black and Blue, 7pm, Science and Technology Building Room C307 - This program will include statistical information and skits about domestic violence. Program will begin at 7pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. October 28: Protect Your Booty, 11am-1pm, Student Health Service Multipurpose Room – Stop by this Halloween-themed interactive event anytime between 11am and 1pm to learn more about the effects of alcohol and other drugs, sexual awareness, date rape and general Halloween safety. October 28: How to Survive the Flu Season, 6pm, Bate 1032 – This program will feature a guest speaker from ECU Student Health Service to teach you healthy habits to help you during flu season. Topics addressed will include how to handle the flu in residence halls, how to handle classes when sick and what medicines should and should not be taken when ill. Flu shots will also be available at the end of the event. Program will being promptly at 6pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. November/December November 2: “Frankenstein: Engendering a Text, Embodying a Text”, 7:00pm, Wright Auditorium – In this lecture, Dr. Temma Berg will discuss body issues of the 19th century as they relate to the novel. November 10: A Discussion on Civil Rights vs. Gay Rights with Gaye Adegbalola, 3pm – 4pm, Mendenhall Great Rooms 1 and 2 - The internationally acclaimed blues artist Gaye Adegbalola will speak on Gay Rights Vs. Civil Rights. Her life experiences in teaching struggling youth for 18 years in V.A. public schools, being a prominent activist in the during the Civil Rights movement, and a cancer survivor have all contributed to Gaye's inspirational story. Program will begin at 3pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. November 11: The Character of Leadership, 5p – 6p, Bate 1020: ECU Alumnus Margaret Bradsher will be sharing with students what tools she has used to be a better leader. She is a former educator and a breast cancer survivor. She will share her battle with cancer and how she continued to work and overcome all these obstacles while undergoing treatment. Program will begin at 5pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. November 15: Be Positive, Stay Negative; 10a – 2p; Wright Plaza: Stop by any time between 10am and 2pm for information and educational activities on HIV and AIDS. Testing will also be available on site for free. November 17: Great American Smokeout and Substance Abuse, 9:30am – 12:30pm, Student Recreation Center Concourse – Come to this event anytime between 9:30am and 12:30pm to learn about the effects of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, cocaine, and other drugs during this interactive health fair sponsored by our Peer Health students. November 17: Student Health Center Tour, 3pm, Student Health Service Multipurpose Room – Participants will learn more about programs and services offered by ECU Student Health Service. Tour will begin on time— credit will not be given to students arriving late. November 18: Creed Week Forum – Take Responsibility for Your Words and Actions, 7:30pm, Mendenhall Great Rooms – Come to this informative program and hear life experiences from campus leaders about taking responsibility for your actions. Learn to be accountable, respectable, and embody what it means to be a true Pirate! Program will begin promptly at 7:30pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. November 18: Failing, Out of Air, and a Lost World: Adventure Stories on 3 Continents, 7p – 8p, Tipsy Teapot (downtown, Evans St.) –What is it like to mountain bike over 4,000 miles in Africa, attempt to climb twice on the coldest mountain in the world, or to explore the land Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based the book The Lost World on? Come out to this exciting program and hear three stories as told by ECU explorers Brandi Dudley, John Fletcher, and John Stowe. Program will begin at 7pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. December 1: “Run in Red: World AIDS Day of Remembrance”, 5pm, Mendenhall Brickyard – Join us in this walk of remembrance for those who have been affected in any way by HIV/AIDS. Walk will be followed by a candlelight vigil and short presentation. Program will begin promptly at 5pm—credit will not be given to students arriving late. December 2: Peer Health Education Health Fair, 10am – 12pm, Student Recreation Center – Stop by the Student Recreation Center anytime between 10am and 12pm. Participants will attend a health fair consisting of 13 educational tables covering subjects such as breast cancer, sexual health, alcohol, tobacco, stress management and nutrition. Stamps will be awarded to participants who visit at least 9 of the tables. Please be sure to bring your OneCard for entry!
