Lesson Plan Day/Date: 06/01/14 Subject: PE Teacher: Mr Hughes National Curriculum Objectives Demonstrate the principles of warm up and cool down Demonstrate the principles of attack and defence Developing agility, balance and co-ordination To improve the consistency, quality and choice of skills used Adapt and develop the basic skills Remember STEP principle. Develop leadership skills. Period/Time: 2.00-3.00 Year Group: y5/6 Module: Modified Rugby Lesson Objectives Warm up for tag Assess ability of group Creating space to receive a pass Hold, catch and pass a rugby ball Play the game of rugby end ball and tag rugby MUST All pupils will know how to how to find space, hold, catch and pass a rugby ball in a game of end ball and understand the importance of a warm up. SHOULD know how to perform a lateral pass and find space to call, catch and pass a rugby ball in a game of Tag COULD Attack inside shoulder, (creating time and space for receiver) and perform a dummy pass in a game of tag. Assessment Opportunities • Students will give feedback to another performer and the teacher, commenting on their techniques, making corrections using key words. • Use of higher and lower order Q & A at beginning, middle and end of lesson. • Hands down questioning relating to the breakdown of the lateral pass. Testing for retention. • HA pupils will be posed scenarios to challenge them further. • Number of completed passes • Peer assessment through students matching up with someone of a similar standard Differentiation: • Matching of ability - separate games for higher and lower order ability • Provide more advanced technical guidance to higher ability • Increase distance between passes • Reduce space and therefore time for higher ability to make decisions • Use overload activities for lower ability to increase chances of success • Use a variety of students to demonstrate, coach and referee • Have more progressions for Higher Ability students • Allow lower ability more time to groove skills • Use a range of higher order to lower order questions (see planned questions section) • Increase the complexity of the challenges for high ability kids e.g. 2v1 to 3v2. • Students encouraged to show flair and range of passes during keep ball • Gold, Silver and Bronze targets Groupings: Mixed Ability Key Words End ball, Multidirectional, Warm up, Cool down, Turnover ball, Agility, Balance, Coordination, Tag, Invasion, Evasion, Attack, Defend and Principle of play, Lateral pass, No. Pupils: 30 Resources: • 18 rugby balls between 2 (size 3) • 30 cones • 18 bibs • Squeeze whistles • Pads if available Literacy : Numeracy Use of keywords to feedback. Provide verbal feedback to another performer. Descriptive feedback of skills using the specific terminology. Keeping score of how many times they can pass in a row. Keeping scores in game situations. Lesson Plan Activity Warm up Tag 5 mins End Game 5 mins Description and set up • Raising body temperature and dynamic stretching in 10x10 • All players run around and stretch in a grid must not bump into each other. • Four players to carry a ball by the belly (chasers) and see how many players they can touch in 30 secs. End Ball (rules). See lesson support page. • Approx. teams of 6 a side (no contact). • Aim – 5 players of team in possession try to get the ball to their goalkeeper who is behind the opposition’s try line. • Player in possession is not allowed to move but all other team members can run into a space and call for the ball. • Change the goalkeepers after every score. (number players 1-6) • All passes must be perfect passes. If they are dropped, go out of play or are touched by a defender then the ball is given to the defending team, who now become the attackers. After a few minutes, • Stop allowing passes that are overhead height, then no goal keepers and they can either pass or run and touch down Key Factors • Raise body temperature • Increase blood flow to muscles • Raise mental arousal • Dynamic stretch • Look for a space • Run into the space • Pass and look for • another space • Call for the ball • Catch the ball and then • listen for a call from • another teammate, then pass or dummy Technical/ Tactical • Catch and pass • Evade • Look for space • Attack space Physical/Mental • Warm up • Cool down • Modified rules • Scoring system • • • • • • • • • • • • • Catch and pass Evade Look for space Attack space Keep the ball moving Endurance Speed Hand and eye co-ordination Rules of the game Decision-making Competence Confidence • Observe warm up and games to assess strengths and weaknesses of pupils. Question pupils to check on understanding of the aim. How to create space – find space, pass and move, use width, speed, fakes, change direction, call for the ball) Keep Ball • 5 mins • • Work in grids in groups of 4 with one player trying to get the ball from the others, who are trying to make 10 perfect passes (keep ball). Gold 10, Silver 7, Bronze 5 No passes above head height to be allowed. Players to discover the best position to be in, in order to call for a pass. (away from the defender, use width, no defender in between) Mini Plenary 2 mins • • Receiver to find space where passer has a clear pass, Ball carrier can dummy pass • • • Accurate pass Defender to shut down ball carriers options • • • • • Endurance Speed Hand and eye co-ordination Rules of the game Lesson Plan Activity Lateral Pass 2v1 10 mins Description and set up • 5 groups of 6 - 10x20 • Use iPad to show the next drill to person demonstrating (Skills and drills, U10s drills– Draw and pass - 2v1) • Two defenders can’t move from their positions • Use best attacker to demonstrate exercise in slow motion. • Demonstrate lateral Pass and seek feedback and corrections. • Demo at full pace and show transitions - two players pass to each other while 2 watch and analyse and say why it did or didn’t work. • Use iPad to show students their passing – feedback on own performance Progressions • Two players hold bosh pads can ‘t leave their lines - Sell a dummy if you feel that the defender has committed to the receiver too early. • After a few minutes defenders allowed to leave their lines with bosh pad • After a few minutes defenders put bosh pads down and can tag tackle • Introduce the techniques used in 2v1 situations. Create time and space for the receiver by running for the inside shoulder of the defender and moving the defender away from the receiver. 3 v 2 or 3v3 5 mins Plenary 3 mins Key Factors • Pass has to go backwards • Carry the ball in two hands with fingers spread. • Keep facing forward. Look for the receiver’s target as the pass is made. • Pass for the receiver’s hands. • Aim at far shoulder. • Follow through with hands and arms. • Ball in 2 hands • Attack inside shoulder • (creating time and • space for receiver) or perform a dummy pass Technical/ Tactical • Accuracy • Speed of pass • Always finish practices with a try Physical/Mental • Hand and eye • Co-ordination • Competence • Confidence Timing of pass and • working out the distance to pass from an opponent to maximise taking the defender out of the game • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Introduce basic tag rules: Two hand touch, say tackle and defenders retreat 5 yards. Demonstrate the law of offside Use the widest sides of the playing area as the try lines. Players must pass after being tagged 5 points for a try – first team to 10 points One neutral player is always on the attacking team to increase chances of success One person is referee change after each game HA group moved to 3v3 to increase difficulty • • • • Ask questions to check for understanding of the ‘key factors’. Relating to the main objectives –(find space, hold, catch and pass) Ask the pupils to comment on techniques and tactics that went well and what didn’t go so well What fitness e.g. speed did they demonstrate today Ask for a volunteer to lead a cool down on the way back to the changing rooms. • Go forwards Support Communicate Use the full width of the playing area to create space for receiver Attack inside shoulder Catch and pass Take the ball while moving forward Evade Look for space Attack space • Endurance Speed Hand and eye coordination Rules of the game Lesson Plan Activity Warm up Diagram Chasers hold the ball in two hands with fingers spread around the centre of the ball. Carry the ball at chest height with elbows bent. Game Players run into space and hold hands out to indicate they are ready to catch. Keep eyes on the ball and watch it into the hands in order to catch cleanly and early. Players should not stand still to receive a pass but ensure they get away from a defender. End Ball Rules Referee: Non perfect pass Ball out of play Dropped pass Player running with ball Preventing a pass All of the above offences result in turnover ball Lesson Plan Activity Keep Ball Players do not need to pass to someone different every time. The objective is to make 10 passes so the teacher may observe and refer to the tactics adopted. Focus on the outcome of the pass in preference to method. Players are encouraged to pass and offload with experimentation, tricks and sleight of hand. Diagram Lesson Plan Activity Warm up/cool down Tag Lower Order Questions • Why do we warm up? • What is a dynamic stretch? • How do you hold a rugby ball? Higher Order Questions • What constitutes a three part warm up? • Why do we need to get our heart rate up? Increase oxygen intake to match demand End Game/Mini Plenary • • • How did you create space for yourself? How else can you create space? How else can you increase your chances of receiving the ball? (Communication) • • Was there someone you thought created space very well and what did they do? What communication can you use to let you own team member know where to pass ?
