EU-ARD Project
Crop Diversification
Growth and development Assessment of On-Farm Cassava variety
Evaluation/Demonstration Trial - Kopafo Pilot Site
Brief Background
Prolong dry conditions in Kopafo is greatly affecting crop production in the area. The NARIEU ARD project is working with the target community to test and provide different drought
tolerant crop species and cultivars with use of improved production techniques to improve
food production. One such crop is the drought tolerant cassava varieties, which were
evaluated for their performance at the Kopafo pilot site.
Eleven (11) cassava varieties inclusive of nine (9) NARI recommended two (2) common
farmer varieties were included in the on-farm participatory evaluation trial sites. The on-farm
cassava evaluation trial at Kopafo pilot site were established at three different model farmer
sites; (a) Lulugu, (b) Sareparo and (c) Son Stone, based on the distribution of the population
and social structure (clans) in the area.
Observation and data collection are carried out at on monthly bases to observe the vegetative
growth and performance of the cassava varieties. Through participatory evaluation and
selection process with the communities, the best performing (yield) and sensory traits will be
selected and adopted by the farmers to address some of the food shortage problems faced in
the area during period of drought.
Objectives: To assess the growth and development performance at the vegetative stage of the
different cassava evaluation trials.

Site description and remarks:
o Date of planting: 8th April 2014
o The trial was established an old peanut garden with a slope of about 20 degrees.
o Soil Type: Loam
o Soil color: Black
o Because of the slope and fine loamy soil type the soil was free drainage, however, the
farmer was instructed to construct drainage to direct the flow of water run-off and soil
erosion.
o Eleven (11) NARI cassava verities were used with two (2) local cassava varieties.
o Standard planting spacing of 1m x 1m (as mention above).
o Date of first Assessment: 17th June 2014.

Figure 1: A general view of the cassava evaluation/demonstration trial plot
at Lulugu site. The site was not attended to resulting with over growth of
weeds.
Figure 2: Weeding was done at the base of each of the sample plants
before the growth and development assessment was carried out.
Cassava Assessment – Kopafo Pilot Site
Page 3
Figure 3: The over growth of weeds has
resulted with cassava variety growth
being suppressed as pictured above.
Figure 4: The competition between the crop and
the weeds for exposure to sunlight has caused
elongation of the stem in some cassava varieties.
As a result, when the weeds were cleared, the
elongated cassava stems were left vulnerable to
break against the force of the wind.
Model farmer’s comments and remarks:
*Note.
The model farmer was unavailable to be interviewed. The team was later informed that the
model farmer was involved in a fight with some member of the community. As a result, he
was not around when the trial was assessed.
General comments from observation – Lulugu trial site
 The trial was poorly managed. The cassava plots are over grown with weeds.
 Generally, the growth of most of the cassava varieties at the trial site was slow, which
is caused by the dense growth of weeds in and around the trial plots. Some sample
plants on the other hand grew soft elongated stems as seen in figure 4; this may come
about as a result of competition for exposure to sunlight between the crop and the
weeds.

There was no growth noted with cassava variety ‘L06’ and ‘L51’. This may be caused
by the dense growth of weeds that suppressed the crops growth, or the materials may
have dried up before they were transplanted.

Figure 5: A view of the cassava evaluation/demonstration plots at Sareparo
trial site. The cassava growth performance in this trial was generally good,
however, the crops growth are reported to be disturbed by cattle’s.
Figure 6: Pictured is a
cassava variety that has
been badly damaged by
cattle’s. The model
farmer reported that food
crops damage by cattle’s
are common in the area.
The animals regularly
move around at night to
graze.

Page 16
Figure 7: The cattle’s tend to graze only on the cassava shoots has pictured
above.
Model farmer’s comments and remarks:
o Cattle’s are a major pest in the area. A lot of cassava varieties have been damaged by
the animal.
o The recent changes in the weather condition may have an effect on the cassava’s
growth.
General comments from observation – Sareparo trial site

Generally, the trial site was well managed. Weeding was done regularly to prevent
weeds from growing and mulching was also done.

The trial site is located at an old cattle paddock. No fences were constructed around
the trial site resulting with the crops being damaged by the animal. It was also noted
that the locals’ who do gardening within the same paddock experience similar
problems with the animals.

The weather condition at the area has been very dry. The locals stated that after the
ice storm that occurred earlier that month, it has not rained again in the area for at
least three (3) weeks.

Figure 8: A general view of the cassava evaluation/demonstration trial at the Son Stone.
The trial site was also covered with weeds.
Figure 9: The
model farmer
however managed
to weed part of
the trial site. He
later said that
some of the
local’s advised
him to leave the
weeds so to help
preserve soil
moisture during
the dry weather
period.

Figure 10: Some cassava varieties were
reported to be damaged by goats grazing
in the area as shown above.
Figure 10: Pictured is a cassava
variety growing among weeds.
Model farmer’s comments and remarks:
o There was no rain in the area for some time.
o The model farmer managed to weed part of the cassava garden. However, some of the
local’s advised him to leave the weeds grow so to help preserve soil moisture during
the dry weather period.
o The model farmer enquires if he could intercrop tomatoes with the cassava varieties.
This is to help him manage the growth of weeds in the trial area.
o Some cassava varieties have been damaged by cattle’s and goats. Fences were
constructed to prevent any future damage from the animal.
General comments from observation – Son Stone trial site

The trial site was over grown with weeds. The farmer was advised on the impact
weeds can have on the growth and development of the cassava varieties as seen with
the cassava trial site at Lulugu, thus encouraged him to weed the cassava trial plots.
The farmer was provided with options such as mulching to managing soil moisture
loss.

The farmer constructed fences around the garden to prevent animals such as goats
cattle’s and pigs from damaging the cassava trial and his garden.

All 13 cassava varieties in this trial site managed to grow.
