Relationship to mission and strategic plan of institution, and/or college and department goals and objectives: 1. Upon graduation, students will have gained extensive knowledge of their subject areas and teaching: The courses taken in the proposed minor will better equip future elementary and middle grade teachers. Revised 10/02 2 of 3 2. We offer our students a wide array of choices of major, minor, and licensure programs: However, we limit their choices when we provide a minor that requires additional units that are not comparable to other minors. Hence, students do not choose this minor and therefore, few elementary/middle grade teachers have a social studies background. 3. Rationale: Because this minor has a large number of credits needed for completion, enrollment is low. Technically, the minor has six additional units. Additionally, the current minor structure, there are hidden requirements. For example, students must take 3 units of sociology in order enroll in one of the sociology courses in the minor. Another example, group two of the geography has a prerequisite. In the end, students need to complete 36 or more credits in order to obtain this minor. The UW-Whitewater Social Studies Council consists of faculty from Curriculum and Instruction, History, Geography, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, and Psychology. As a council, we provide recommendations of courses that would better equip future elementary and middle school teachers. 4. Cost Implications: None. All courses are regularly offered. There is excess capacity in all the required classes. Revised 10/02 3 of 3
