ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION 4-002
A RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH THE CENTRAL STUDENT GOVERNMENT LEAD
SCHOLARSHIP
WHEREAS,
In recent years we have seen a decline in minority enrollment at the
University of Michigan; AND
WHEREAS,
the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan created the LEAD
Scholars program in 2008 to “enrich the University’s diverse student
body and academic culture” 1; AND

WHEREAS,
students who are offered a LEAD Scholarship are two and a half times as
likely to attend the University as those who are not; AND

WHEREAS,
The average GPA of a LEAD Scholar is 3.9 on a 4.0 scale and the
average ACT is a 30; AND

WHEREAS,
Roughly one half of the LEAD Scholars are first generation college
students; AND

WHEREAS,
The LEAD Scholars program has a 99% retention rate; AND
WHEREAS,
The Alumni Association will be matching our gift to increase our
scholarships from two to four; AND
WHEREAS,
it is the opinion of the Central Student Government (“CSG”) that the
LEAD Scholars Program is well equipped to begin addressing the issue
of minority enrollment on campus; AND
WHEREAS,
The Center for Educational Outreach “administers a series of programs in
collaboration with schools and community agencies. [They] are engaged
with schools and school systems to sponsor programs on topics of interest
to those concerned with academic achievement and educational
progress.”2; AND
WHEREAS,
These programs already bring students into schools to “promote academic
success and college aspiration”3; THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED,

CSG shall partner with the Alumni Association and the Center for
Educational Outreach to create a program that will place and equip
Michigan students to do on-site recruitment and admissions at schools

within a 100 mile radius of campus with the goal of increasing minority
enrollment; AND BE IT FINALLY
RESOLVED,
that CSG shall allocate $10,000 from the Winter 2014 carry forward to
the LEAD Scholars Program. This will create four scholarships for
students.
