SLATE Coursework Upon admission to the Department of French Ph.D. Program, a student in the SLATE option will select, with the consent of an advisor, courses in the general areas listed below. Courses should carry at least 3 hours of credit, with the exception of Linguistics 400, which is presently offered for 2 hours. Any other exceptions must be approved by the student's advisor. 1 course in linguistic theory (Linguistics 400 or equivalent) 2 additional courses in a field of linguistics, as described below: o Course 1: Psycholinguistics/Sociolinguistics. One 400- or 500-level course in psycholinguistics or sociolinguistics o Course 2: Linguistics. One 400- or 500-level course (except LING500) in any field of linguistics, including syntax, phonology, semantics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and neurolinguistics. This course cannot be the same one used to fulfill the coursework in Psycholinguistics/Sociolinguistics, above. 2 courses in advanced French studies (language and/or literature and/or culture) as needed to meet a combined minimum requirement of 28 hours of French studies courses in Stage 1 (MA level) and Stage 2 (Ph.D. Level.) Courses used to fulfill the French studies requirement cannot be the same ones candidates use to fulfill the linguistics requirements, above. 1 course in second language curriculum and/or methodology 2 courses in an area of research specialization selected from among such areas as curriculum design, materials development, computer-assisted instruction, ethnological applications in instruction, program administration, measurement, second language learning strategies, language planning/policy, applied linguistics, teaching culture, teaching a second literature, teaching reading, and second language studies 2 courses in research methodology, as described below: o 1 course in quantitative methodology o 1 course in methodology relevant to the dissertation (quantitative, qualitative, evaluation, survey, ethnography, etc.) Total: 10 courses. Additional courses will be required of students admitted to the option with deficiencies in areas considered to be prerequisite to the above. Similarly, specific area requirements may be waived where the candidate is judged to have sufficient preparation in an area prior to entrance into the option. A minimum of 32 hours of course work is required in Stage 2 (Ph.D. course work). It is expected that the majority of this work will be taken at the 500 level. A total of 64 hours must be completed in Stages 2 (coursework) and 3 (thesis research). Candidates interested in obtaining a SLATE Certificate in addition to the Ph.D. in French should review the requirements for the certificate as they choose their coursework.
