LING 435 / 535 Applied Linguistics

This course provides an introduction to several topics in applied linguistics theory. It
also examines ways in which linguistics theory is applied to solve real world problems
involving language. Students will:
 gain an understanding of the field of applied linguistics and its relationship to the
field of linguistics and other academic disciplines
 begin to form their own identity within, and relationship to, the field of applied
linguistics
 explore what one might do with an applied linguistics degree
 do applied linguistics and reflect on what that means
Texts:
 Required reading (e.g., articles from TESOL Quarterly) will be made available
through the PSU Library’s electronic reserve format.
 Readings from Chen, H. & Cruickshank, K. (2009) Making a Difference: Challenges
for Applied Linguistics. Cambridge Scholars Publishing.
 Optional text: Oaks, D. (1998, 2001). Linguistics at Work: A Reader of Applications,
Harcourt Brace College Publishers. (On 2 hour reserve)

40 % Homework assignments and participation
30% Paper and Presentation
30% Project
