New Board Members - Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre

SIDNEY, BC – Three new members have been elected to the volunteer board that governs
Sidney’s award-winning aquarium of the Salish Sea; the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre.
Elected at the registered charity’s AGM on December 4, 2012 were;
Martina Beck, a marine biologist and graduate student in the School of Environmental Studies at
the University of Victoria and a past employee of Archipelago Marine Research in Victoria.
Bill Cooke, an engineer with a particular interest in ocean technology businesses, strategic
planning, management consulting and mentoring tech companies. Bill is the former CEO of
VIATeC.
Stephen Gormican, an oceanographer and marine biologist with extensive experience as an
environmental consultant. Steve is an instructor and Chair of the Environmental Technology
Program at Camosun College
Other board members include Nancy Barbour (President), Peter Lloyd FCA (Treasurer), Mike
Walden (Secretary) as well as Pat Fafard, Patty Golumbia, Sue Hodgson and Jane Powell.
Board President Nancy Barbour stated “Our high quality education programs and scientific
credentials are essential to the integrity of the aquarium as a champion for the Salish Sea. Our
new board members add greatly to our capabilities as an organization.”

About Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre
Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is an aquarium and marine education centre focused on the diverse ecosystem
of the Salish Sea. It is a not-for-profit community facility. Funds to operate the aquarium and associated
education programs come from admissions revenues, memberships and generous community support
through donations. Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is governed, funded, and owned by the New Marine
Centre Society a registered charity. The centre is located on the waterfront in Sidney, British Columbia.
