The aquarium’s free event, happening on the scenic Sidney waterfront, will offer fun and educational activities for all ages. A wide range of exhibitors will be on site, including Ocean Networks Canada, Raincoast Conservation, Rockfish Divers, and more, as well as an array of fun marine-related games and prizes, live performances by the Cascadian Crusaders, kayak skills and drills, diving demonstrations, face painting, food, and artists. Partial sponsorship of this event was provided by the Sidney Business Improvement Area. Similar to Earth Day, the purpose of World Oceans Day is to recognize the significance of the ocean on human life as well as encourage people to participate in activities that demonstrate their appreciation for the sea. The concept was first brought forward by Canadian representatives at the Earth Summit in 1992 in an effort to raise a global awareness on issues relating to the ocean. In 2008, the date of June 8th was officially designated by the United Nations as World Oceans Day and has been celebrated worldwide ever since, both by international organizations like The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network as well as by locally-based aquariums and conservation groups.
