POSITION TITLE: Patient Care Supervisor RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Patient Care Services DATE: June 1, 2014 JOB SUMMARY: The Patient Care Supervisor provides oversight for multiple hospital departments in the absence of unit Directors. The PCS addresses patient care, staffing, and any other issues that may arise. Supervises nurses and staff and takes administrative responsibilities as directed. Administrative responsibilities include meeting with patients and family members to discuss concerns or patient care. The ability to evaluate issues and trends, as well as address and resolve issues collaboratively with hospital executives and director, is also required. The Patient Care Supervisor has some oversight of the unit staffing and proactively communicates staffing needs to the unit director as needed, using professional and supervisory discretion. These duties include providing effective distribution and utilization of personnel with emphasis on staffing for nursing areas by coordinating work schedules and shift coverage. Leads and directs the work of others. The Patient Care Supervisor sets the example for staff members and is available to staff as a resource to de-escalate, troubleshoot and solve front-line issues. The Patient Care Supervisor promotes teamwork and is the primary liaison between departments. These activities are carried out using sound judgment and critical thinking skills. The Patient Care Supervisor handles all these functions and makes resources available to the doctors and the patients to ensure proper functioning of the hospital. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work environment is located in a comfortable indoor area. Conditions such as noise, odors, cramped workspace and/or fumes could sometimes cause discomfort. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. Currently licensed to practice as a professional registered nurse in the state of Missouri. A BSN is preferred. Knowledge of all main functional areas of the hospital is essential. Current Basic Life Support Certification Current Advanced Life Support Certification RELATIONSHIPS: Reports director to the Director of Patient Care Services. Works closely with the Nursing Directors and V.P. of Nursing. Has an associate relationship with all Department Directors. Leads and directs the work of bedside care disciplines.
