Internship Journal (Spring 2012-Spring 2013) Education/Studios @ Figge Art Museum (200 hrs/ 4 credits) 1/9/12 9am – 2pm (5hrs) framing Muscatine show Activities: Cat and I began framing the student works for the Muscatine Young Artist show. Using the frames at the Figge specifically for the YA show, we started matting and framing the pieces and wrapping the extra pieces of glass we didn’t use. The 3D pieces had to be framed without glass. We also had to clean the glass for every frame since they had been sitting in the cabinet for a while. Reflection: Since it was our first time we hadn’t developed any particular process of doing the work so it took some time to figure out how to get it done as quickly and efficiently as possible. We had over 70 to do and not all had been labeled, numbered, or sized correctly. The 3D burgers were really heavy too and we had problems keeping them attached to the backing they were on and keeping them in the frames. It was a good experience prepping for a kids show and it was rewarding to see how amazing the kids’ works were framed and seeing the range of creativity in the pieces. It was also helpful for me to get ideas on projects other teachers were doing with their students. Next Steps: finish framing and hanging show by Friday (5hrs) 1/10/12 9am – 2pm (5hrs) framing Muscatine show Activities: Cat and I finished framing the student works for the Muscatine show. Reflection: We did run into several works of art that were supposed to be vertical or horizontal and were the opposite. Since the layout for the show had specific vertical and horizontal pieces on specific walls, this provided a challenge. Next Steps: hang show (10hrs) 1/13/12 9am – 1pm (4hrs) hanging Muscatine show Activities: Cat and I hung the works for the Muscatine show. Courtney had already put in the screws in the exact layout they had planned out and we had a sheet to follow with the layout on it and numbers corresponding to the numbers on the pieces, provided by the teachers. Reflection: Even though we had the layout, we still ran into challenges with the pieces that weren’t vertical or horizontal where they should be. Also, all the works on the moveable walls were not specified to be vertical or horizontal and Courtney ended up having to move the screws to adjust to the works provided. We kept having to reattach the burgers too because the weight and angle kept making them fall of their backing. The hot glue did not hold so we had to use pins and tape. Next Steps: get ready for the reception on Sunday (14hrs) 1/15/12 11am – 2pm (3hrs) Muscatine reception Activities: I took photos of the students and families with the art work, talked with the families and answered questions. Reflection: Seeing the excited kids and families and the artwork hung and framed was worth the work. It was rewarding to be able to help make the show happen and to celebrate the students’ talents and creativity. Next Steps: Take down the Muscatine show and switch out North Scott works and Muscatine works in frames. (17hrs) 1/17/12 2:30pm- 3:30pm (1hr) meeting with Lynn Activities: I met with Lynn to talk about activities for the Homeschool Workshops at the Figge. Reflection: Lynn and I work really well together bouncing ideas off each other and getting ready for classes. Next Steps: continue work on YA shows (18hrs) 1/23/12 9am – 1:30pm (4.5hrs) framing North Scott show Activities: Cat and I took down the works from the Muscatine show, put them back in the boxes from Muscatine and framed the works from North Scott. Reflection: The second week of framing went a bit quicker than the first as we developed a better routine for switching out the works and we didn’t have to clean the glass for every one either. Next Steps: finish framing and hang North Scott show (22.5hrs) 1/24/12 9am – 1pm (4hrs) framing and hanging North Scott show Activities: Cat and I finished framing and hanging North Scott show. Reflection: We had to do some rearranging on the walls because the teachers didn’t always follow the guidelines. Next Steps: reception for North Scott (26.5hrs) 1/26/12 10:30 – 12:30 (2hrs) meeting about NASA Activities: I met with Cat and Lauren to talk about the NASA exhibition and our ideas for the educational materials for the show in conjunction with the Figge Education department. Reflection: It has been neat to be involved in the NASA meetings since it is such a big show, to get a glimpse into the planning that the Education department does in prep for big shows and the events that go along with them. It is also an interesting experience to be able to plan some of the activities on our own to present to the Education staff during the next meeting. Next Steps: continue meetings for NASA and studio work for Lynn (28.5hrs) 1/27/12 10am – 2pm (4hrs) meeting with Lynn and studio work Activities: I met with Lynn to talk about and plan intern hours and classes. I also helped clean up the studios and organize the cupboards. Reflection: Lynn’s always so nice about working with my schedule and helping me with hours. I am glad I can help her in return by keeping the studios cleaned and organized. Next Steps: continue YA shows (32.5hrs) 1/29/12 11am – 2pm (3hrs) North Scott reception Activities: I greeted families as they entered the gallery, directed them to the auditorium, and answered questions. Reflection: It’s always fun and interesting to see which families come to the reception and how excited the kids get to see their artwork framed on the walls. Next Steps: take down the North Scott show and hang the Davenport show (35.5hrs) 2/2/12 10am – 12pm (2hrs) meeting with Mona Activities: I met with a mother about doing a birthday party art activity for her daughter’s party. We talked about ideas for the activity and how many kids to plan for and approximately what length of time to plan the activity for etc. Reflection: This was my first experience planning for a birthday party activity. It’s much different than doing a class activity since it’s much more laid back and not as structured. You don’t have to focus as much on what you want to teach the children, but instead more on helping them have fun doing something artsy they enjoy. Next Steps: prepare some materials and ideas for the birthday party (37.5hrs) 2/4/12 11am – 3:30pm (4.5hrs) Family Day Activities: I helped make samples, cut pieces for projects, and supervised the kids activity tables in the studios. Reflection: There were over 700 people who showed up for the Family Day and the studios were very crowded. So we had to constantly straighten and organize the tables and cut more pieces and make copies. We ran out of paper and had to cut a lot more fish, but the kids and families were really excited and enthusiastic about the projects and the galleries and museum. It was exciting to be a part of the event and interact with the families and get their feedback on the event and the museum. Next Steps: continue framing and hanging YA shows (42hrs) 2/6/12 12pm-1pm (1hr) meeting with Lynn Activities: Lynn and I met to talk about the Homeschool workshops, b’day party, and intern hours. Reflection: Even though she had an outline she wanted to follow, we still had other details to go over for the workshops and needed time to touch base on my hours and plans for the b’day party etc. Next Steps: continue workshops and YA shows (43hrs) 2/7/12 9am – 10am (1hr) prep for Homeschool Workshop Activities: I helped Lynn set up the studios for the Homeschool Workshop. We set up tables and supplies and went over the lesson plan for the day. Reflection: It’s been an amazing experience to be able to co-teach these workshops with Lynn. The Figge has a policy that they can’t pay people to teach classes that are counted as intern hours. So I can’t count the actual teaching toward my hours but I can count the prep hours. Next Steps: continue YA shows (44hrs) 2/13/12 9am – 2pm (5hrs) framing Davenport show Activities: Lauren and Cat and I framed the works for the Davenport YA show. Reflection: Framing went so much quicker with three people working this time. Next Steps: finish installing the show (49hrs) 2/14/12 9am – 10am (1hr) prep for Homeschool Workshop Activities: Lynn and I got the studios ready for the 3 rd Homeschool Workshop Reflection: By the 3rd session we had our process well figured out Next Steps: final workshop, prep for b’day party, YA shows (50hrs) 2/20/12 12pm – 3pm (3hrs) lesson planning for b’day party Activities: I went to Hobby Lobby to look at supplies for the birthday party, according to what Mona and I had discussed. I also spent some time looking through the books Lynn gave me, gathering ideas online, and putting together a couple of short fun activities for the party. Reflection: Planning for the party was fun, but since I had never done a party before I was uncertain how it would actually go. Next Steps: continue YA shows and get set up for party (53hrs) 2/26/12 11:30am – 2:30pm (3hrs) Davenport reception Activities: My sister and I served refreshments in the café for the students and their parents. Reflection: I enjoyed seeing another aspect of the reception and being able to interact with the students and the parents after the reception ceremony. The students were so happy and well-behaved and the families were so excited and appreciative. It was a really pleasant experience for everyone involved. Next Steps: take down the Davenport show and put up the Moline show (56hrs) 2/28/12 9:30am – 11:30am (2hrs) Seton Look and Do Tour Activities: I assisted Lynn in the studio with the Seton middle school art activity. Reflection: There were quite a few teachers and assistants with the class already so we helpers from the Figge did not have much to do other than help as needed. The teachers kept the kids under control so we just walked around and looked at the students work and gave encouraging words or pointers if they wanted help. The class was rather large and would have been a little chaotic if the teachers hadn’t kept them quiet. It wasn’t really as crazy as Family Day was though. Next Steps: keep working on YA shows (58hrs) 3/5/12 9am – 12pm (3hrs) framing Moline show Activities: Cat and I framed Moline and took down the Davenport show. Reflection: We have a pretty good system figured out. Next Steps: finish Moline show (61hrs) 3/6/12 9:15am – 12:15pm (3hrs) framing/hanging Moline show Activities: Cat and I finished framing and hanging the Moline show. Reflection: We have a routine for framing and hanging now. Next Steps: reception for Moline (64hrs) 3/8/12 3:30 – 4:30 (1hr) meeting with Lynn Activities: I met with Lynn about intern hours after the break Reflection: After a short break I will be back to keep working on the YA shows and help with a Look and Do tour Next Steps: continue shows and studio work (65hrs) 3/15/12 5pm – 7:30pm (2.5hrs) reception for Moline Activities: I served refreshments to the students and families in the studio following the ceremony. Reflection: There was such a mad rush of people I couldn’t keep up with both the drinks and snacks since I was the only person serving. Finally a couple other volunteers noticed I had a line and a spill on the ground and rushed over to help. It was a little stressful. But the families left almost as quickly as they came, maybe because it was a school night. I wonder why Moline has their reception in the evening. Next Steps: take down Moline show and put up Bettendorf show (67.5hrs) 3/26/12 9am – 10:30am and 12pm – 1pm (2.5hrs) framing Bettendorf show Activities: Cat and I framed the Bettendorf works and took down the Moline show. Reflection: I had to go to a job interview in the middle of framing that morning so we didn’t get very much done that day. Next Steps: finish framing and hanging Bettendorf show (70hrs) 3/27/12 9am – 1pm (4hrs) framing and hanging Bettendorf show Activities: Cat and I finished framing and hanging the Bettendorf show. Reflection: Seeing all the different works from different teachers and students has been enjoyable. Next Steps: reception for Bettendorf (74hrs) 3/29/12 8:30am – 10:30am (2hrs) Look and Do Tour Activities: I assisted with the studio art activity part of the students’ Look and Do tour. Reflection: I was only able to stay for a short time since I had other places I had to go this day, but it was interesting seeing different Look and Do tours and how the students react to the art work and activity and how the teachers handle them. I think this was a Catholic school and the group was smaller than Seton’s and quieter. Next Steps: keep working on YA exhibitions (76hrs) 4/3/12 2pm – 3pm (1hr) meeting with Lynn Activities: I met with Lynn about intern hours. Reflection: Lynn is always so understanding about my busy schedule and helping me get more hours and always thanking me for helping her when I am the one who is so grateful to her for all the experience and opportunity! Next Steps: continue YA shows (77hrs) 4/15/12 12pm – 2pm (2hrs) reception for Bettendorf Activities: Cat and I helped direct parents and students, answer questions, take pictures, and any other tasks that needed doing during the reception, as well as setup and tear down. Reflection: Bettendorf opted to have only one reception ceremony rather than two or three like the others so everyone had to try to fit into the auditorium all at once. People commented on how hot and crowded it was and had to squeeze their kids down the aisles to try to get them into the front for their certificates. In general, though, people were still appreciative of everything the Figge was doing and excited to have their kids’ artwork on display there. Next Steps: take down the Bettendorf show and put up the Geneseo show (79hrs) 4/16/12 10am – 5pm (7hrs) framing and hanging Geneseo show Activities: Cat and I took down the Bettendorf show, framed all of the Geneseo show and hung everything. Reflection: Since we both had the whole day to spend at the Figge, we decided to get everything done in one day. The work went smoothly and it was nice to get it all finished in one day. Next Steps: reception for Geneseo (86hrs) 4/24/12 1:30pm – 3pm (1.5hr) meeting with Lynn Activities: I met with Lynn about intern hours and classes and activity ideas. Reflection: Lynn is a great mentor and it’s really nice doing my internship at the Figge with her, getting all this experience with someone so enjoyable to work with. Next Steps: continue YA shows (87.5hrs) 5/6/12 11am – 2pm (3hrs) reception for Geneseo Activities: Cat and I helped direct guests, answer questions, serve refreshments, clean up and tear down reception. Reflection: This reception went smoothly and since it was the sixth one Cat and I had done we felt very confident about helping with everything that needed doing. Next Steps: take down Geneseo show and put up Pleasant Valley show (90.5hrs) 5/7/12 11am – 1pm (2hrs) framing Pleasant valley show Activities: Cat and I took down the Geneseo art works and framed the Pleasant valley artworks, Reflection: By the seventh time we had switched out shows we had a good system for framing, taking down works, and hanging works. We ran into a few bumps along the way with works not being vertical and horizontal when they needed to be and with framing certain 3D works, but otherwise the work went smoothly. Next Steps: finish Pleasant Valley show (92.5hrs) 5/8/12 9am – 3pm (6hrs) framing/ hanging Pleasant Valley show Activities: Cat and I finished framing and hanging the Pleasant Valley show. Reflection: I was glad to gain some experience doing preparator work. I had done a lot of framing for my own artwork prior to this, so I had experience framing. It was rewarding doing it for student artwork on display on the Figge though. Even though the screws were set in the walls for us, we still were able to hang everything ourselves and take some liberties with the arrangement of the pieces as needed. Next Steps: reception for Pleasant Valley (98.5hrs) 5/15/12 12pm – 5pm (5hrs) lesson planning for summer classes Activities: I made a supply list and created a plan of activities for the classes I was scheduled to teach during the summer. Reflection: I had taught classes with another teacher one summer for Bloomington Parks and Rec but this will be my first time teaching a class at the Figge Art Museum. I know Lynn has complete faith in me but I am a bit nervous about the prospect of teaching an entire room of children by myself. This will be a really good experience for me. Next Steps: kids classes during the summer (103.5hrs) 5/22/12 2pm – 3pm (1hr) meeting with Lynn Activities: I met with Lynn to talk about teaching and helping with classes during the summer. Reflection: I had helped Lynn teach the homeschool workshops and had assisted with the look and do tours and receptions etc., but I was really excited about getting a lot of hands on experience teaching and working in kids classes at the Figge. Next Steps: kids summer classes (104.5hrs) 6/14/12 7pm – 8pm (1hr) prep the studios for class Activities: I came into the studios after work to prep for class the next morning. I gathered materials from the cupboards, and arranged the materials and tables as I wanted them for the next morning. Reflection: I spent a lot of time prepping since it was my first class and I was a bit nervous and wanted everything to be easily accessible and well-prepared. Next Steps: kids summer classes (105.5hrs) 6/20/12 8am – 4:30pm (8.5hrs) Art in the Middle Activities: I helped the other interns and volunteers assist the teacher with drawing activities with the middle schoolers as well as prep before and clean up after. Reflection: After teaching my first class at the Figge the Friday before, it was helpful to observe how another teacher worked with the kids. Gloria worked with city kids in an after school program and knew how to handle teenagers and middle schoolers in a no-nonsense way which kept them in order. Drawing can be challenging to teach with kids, but she kept it interesting by dividing up the activities between still life activities, quick fun doodles, copying master works, drawing from imagination, working at different sizes and different materials. She also combined a final critique/ showing at the end which helps the kids communicate, talk and think about their artworks, and move around the room. The boys did get antsy toward the end but she was good at corralling them and reminding them to be respectful. Next Steps: Art in the Middle next week (114hrs) 6/27/12 8am – 4:30pm (8.5hrs) Art in the Middle Activities: I helped with the other interns and volunteers to assist Ralph with teaching painting activities to the middle schoolers. Reflection: Ralph had a very calm way of dealing with the kids since he’d taught middle school for several years. Gloria had been a bit tougher with the kids. While Ralph’s class was a bit more laid back in general. He did have them do some beginning painting exercises leading up to the final project of a mandala. It was important for me to observe different teaching and discipline styles. I also appreciated making the contacts with other teachers/artists in the area. Next Steps: Fridays @ the Figge (122.5hrs) 6/29/12 8am – 4:30pm (8.5hrs) Fridays @ the Figge Activities: I helped the other interns and volunteers assist Adam teaching the K-2nd graders about sculpture. Reflection: Adam was my favorite teacher to work with. He was experienced teaching and knew how to discipline the kids but keep class lighthearted. He wrote out a schedule which really helped with time management. The activities were well-planned and supplemented with bathroom and snack breaks, moving activities and short educational films to keep the kids from getting bored and unruly. Next Steps: Art in the Middle next week (131hrs) 7/11/12 12:30pm – 3:30pm (3hrs) Art in the Middle Activities: I helped the graphic arts teacher by walking around with the other interns and volunteers helping the kids if the needed anything. Reflection: I taught Kaleidoscope that morning so I was only able to help with the second half of the class. The kids seemed very interested in the subject and activities. I was very impressed by the kids’ talents and concentration in this class. Next Steps: final Fridays @ the Figge (134hrs) 8/3/12 8am – 4:30pm (8.5hrs) Fridays @ the Figge Activities: I assisted Deanna along with the other volunteers and interns with the K-2nd graders. Reflection: Deanna kept the kids entertained with stories in between activities. It was helpful to see each different teachers’ activities and ways of dividing up the time. Next Steps: talk to Lynn about more intern hours (142.5hrs) 8/20/12 12pm – 1pm (1hr) Meeting with Lynn Activities: I met with Lynn to talk about my work schedule and when I could come in to do intern hours in the next couple weeks. Reflection: My schedule has gotten really busy with work and classes starting again so I have limited times for intern hours, but Lynn is so nice about working with my schedule and coming up with things for me to do in the studios to fill intern hours. Next Steps: help Lynn with tasks in the studios (143.5hrs) 8/22/12 10am – 5:30pm (7.5hrs) Thursday night and studio prep Activities: I cut up cardboard boxes into 12 x 18 pieces, scrubbed the sink in Studio 4, sharpened all the pencils in the studios and Artica and Family Gallery, made more balloon books for the Family Gallery, and helped Lynn set up Studio 4 for Thursday night. Reflection: I think it’s important as an intern to have to do some of the “dirty work” to understand all the aspects that keep a museum running. Next Steps: continue helping Lynn in the studios (151hrs) 8/31/12 10am – 5pm (7hrs) studio work Activities: I cut paper for Beaux Arts and watercolor paper for the adult watercolor class, sharpened all the pencils again, cleaned the outsides of the cupboards in all the other studios, organized the two for cupboards, made copies for Heather and handouts about Family Day, and labeled postcards for Susan. Reflection: I was glad to do some other tasks for other departments to get a broader picture of what has to be done on a daily basis. Next Steps: continue helping Lynn in the studios (158hrs) 9/13/12 5pm – 9pm (4hrs) Brownie Painting Palooza Activities: I assisted Lynn with the Girl Scout Painting Palooza class. I checked the kids in, helped with supplies, prep and clean up, and helped the kids as needed. Reflection: We had more troops than we had registered due to a mix up during registration so we had to make a few changes with supplies and do some quick prep work but we were able to adjust accordingly. The moms were extremely helpful and enthusiastic which helped immensely. It was a good experience in learning how to adjust to unexpected circumstances. The girls were excited and seemed to have fun as did most of the moms so it turned out well. Next Steps: prep for Family Day tomorrow (162hrs) 9/15/12 10am – 1pm (3hrs) Family Day Activities: Lauren and I helped finish setting up for Family Day and kept an eye on the studios and supplies. We cut rocketship pieces and put out new supplies as needed. Reflection: Family Day was very busy as usual but not as crazy as the Fins and Feathers one. It was fun watching the families enjoy the activities and helping things run smoothly. Next Steps: help Lynn with Outreach prep (165hrs) 9/25/12 2pm – 4pm (2hrs) prep for Outreach/ meeting with Lynn Activities: I helped Lynn get supplies ready for her Outreach class this afternoon. Reflection: It is very interesting and important to see the prep work that goes into different educational classes and programming at the Figge and nice to be able to feel like I am helping also. Next Steps: figure out hours for the next couple weeks (167hrs) 9/27/12 10:30am – 11:30am (1hr) meeting with Lynn Activities: I met with Lynn to talk about her plans for Outreach and what research I could do to help her. Reflection: Since I didn’t have any hours during the day to come in, she gave me some ideas to look up for Outreach that I could do during the evening. Next Steps: research for Outreach (168hrs) 10/2/12 10:30pm – 11pm (.5hr) ideas for Outreach activity Activities: I looked up some portrait ideas for Lynn for Outreach to go along with the portrait exhibition at the Figge. Reflection: Lynn and I talked about some possible ideas for projects she wanted to do with her Outreach kids that I could research. So I looked at different portrait ideas on educational sites for teachers. I found a couple that sounded more creative than your average portrait and sent them to her. Next Steps: meet with Lynn to brainstorm ideas for more projects and hours in the next couple weeks (168.5hrs) 10/25/12 5:30pm – 9pm (3.5hrs) College Night Activities: I set up some materials in Studio 2, helped assist with the activities in Studios 1 and 2, and cleaned up Studio 2 afterwards. Reflection: There was not much maintenance required for these activities as compared to Family Day. I spent more time just interacting with people, keeping an eye on the Studios and watching the activities downstairs such as the hip hop dance workshop. Next Steps: continue hours in the spring (172hrs) 1/8/13 10am – 12:30pm (2.5hrs) framing Muscatine show Activities: Jess, Lauren, Dana, and I framed the works for the Muscatine YA show. Reflection: I only had a couple of hours to contribute since I had to go to work at 1:45; but since there were four of us working, we were almost half way done framing all the works in those two hours. It was easy to get back into the routine I had gotten into last year of taking apart the frames, cleaning the glass, and framing the works. Next Steps: install the show and continue with YA exhibitions schedule (174.5hrs) 1/12/13 10am – 1pm (3hrs) Family Day Activities: I helped set up Studio 3 for the paper collage portraits, oversaw the studio with the help of a couple other volunteers, added supplies as needed, answered family questions, interacted with the families and kids, and kept the tables as organized as I could between families. Reflection: This year was much less crowded and more organized than last year. Keeping the supplies on a separate table for them to pick up and take to the tables to work seemed to work better than having them in piles in the center if the work tables. I wonder what was the difference in visitor attendance between the two years. I had to leave before the day was over since I had to be at work that day as well. Next Steps: continue with YA shows (177.5hrs) 1/24/13 12:30pm – 3:30pm (3hrs) framing Moline show Activities: Lauren, Jess, and I took the Muscatine works out of the frames and framed the Moline works. Reflection: The work went quicker when we each worked on our own stack as opposed to trying to do an assembly line because typically one person or two were faster than the other at a certain task. We were all done framing and nearly done hanging by the time I had to leave for work that day which was a relief. Next Steps: reception for Moline (180.5 hrs) 2/7/13 5:30pm – 7:30pm (2hrs) Moline reception Activities: Another volunteer and I served refreshments at tables in the lobby to the students and their parents. Reflection: There were multiple events going on that night at the Figge so the lobby was crowded with people in the beginning. Many of the families and other guests at the museum came to get refreshments before the reception even started. We were still able to serve almost everyone and didn’t run out until the very end as everyone was leaving. Everyone was in such good spirits and very appreciative for the drinks and cookies. It was quite enjoyable to interact with everyone and share in their joy and excitement. Next steps: meet with Lynn about more hours for next week (182.5hrs) 2/11/13 1:35pm – 4:05pm (2.5hrs) prep for Cajun fest and b’day party Activities: I helped Lynn organize Studio 1 and Artica. I sharpened pencils and helped her put away the supplies from Outreach. I also helped gather materials for the Mardi Gras mask activity for the Cajun Fest tomorrow night. I also made little sketch pads for the b’day party bags and started putting them together for Saturday. Reflection: I was so excited to be back in the studios helping Lynn, even just doing little tasks that needed to be done. Whenever I’m working in the studios or helping get ready for classes/ activities I am reminded that is what I love doing and where I want to put my energy into. Next Steps: find out from Lynn if Natalie needs volunteers for tomorrow night (185 hrs) 2/15/13 1pm – 4:30pm (3.5hrs) prep for b’day party Activities: I finished stuffing the bags for the b’day party, cut paper, and set up the studio for the b’day party the following day. Then I went to the library and found several books for younger children’s painting activities involving animal activities. Reflection: Lynn was not going to be available the day of the party so she left me in charge. After speaking with her about the details and after having done one the month before, I was confident I could handle it. I did spend a while at the library finding books for younger children’s art activities since the children were between 4-6 years old. I also wanted to tie in a work/ technique on display at the Figge. I picked out a couple activities but ended up choosing the mirror activity since it worked well with the Red April piece in the permanent gallery as well as incorporated the animal theme. It was also simple enough the 4-6 year olds wouldn’t have to struggle with it. I wanted it to be fun not stressful for the party. Next Steps: b’day party tomorrow (188.5hrs) 4/11/13 1pm – 4pm (3hrs) studio work Activities: I worked on lesson plan ideas for the summer classes I will be teaching. I took pictures for Heather of the art class in Studio 3. I also replenished the supplies and sharpened pencils in Artica, Studio 1, and the Family Gallery. Reflection: I spent some time looking at the schedule and what exhibitions will be at the Figge this summer to make sure I connect my lessons with the tour the kids will have. I also walked through the permanent exhibits to refresh my memory on the pieces there for more ideas. I also wanted to make sure the family areas were well stocked for Family Day on Saturday. Next Steps: prep for Monday’s Look and Do tour and work on lesson plans for summer workshops. (191.5hrs) 4/12/13 11am – 3:30pm (4.5hrs) studio work Activities: I worked some more on lesson ideas for the summer. I also helped Lynn take the rest of the pieces from the College Invitational downstairs for pickup. I helped clean up Studio 4, and put drawing tables in the Wintergarden for Family Day. I made copies of the tracing of the portrait head for the class on Monday. I also made a sample for the class as well. Reflection: I’m glad I can help Lynn and the education department whenever I get the chance. It’s also a good experience seeing what Lynn does on an average day, and on the days in prep for events like Family Day tomorrow. Next Steps: Monday Look and Do and continue lesson ideas (196hrs) 4/15/13 8am – 9am (1hr) set up for Monday class Activities: I helped Lynn set up the studios for the middle school Look and Do tour and studio activity. We rearranged the tables and set out the supplies. We also taped up examples of portraits and lettering on the chalk boards, and drew examples of proportion. Reflection: One hour was barely enough time to set up, but we got everything ready. I didn’t have much time to draw out my example for proportions, but I was able during the actual activity to spend one on one time helping the kids with proportion and drawing eyes and noses and mouths. Next Steps: prep for Saturday and framing for Geneseo (197hrs) 4/16/13 10am – 1pm (3hrs) prep for Saturday and framing for Geneseo Activities: Lynn showed me the clay flower activity for the Brownie class I am teaching on Saturday and we planned out the details for it. We also created a sample. Then I helped Lauren and Cat frame some of the works for the Geneseo Young Artist exhibition. Reflection: I enjoy working with Lynn on planning activities.
