REDEEMER CHURCH OF KNOXVILLE THE DIVINE SERVICE The First Sunday after Epiphany: The Baptism of Our Lord 5. Since from his bounty I receive, such proofs of love divine. Had I a thousand hearts to give, Lord, they should all be thine A thousand men could not compose a worthy song to bring Yet your love is a melody our hearts can’t help but sing! JANUARY 13, 2013 | 9:00 & 11:00 AM In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, this church opens wide her doors and offers welcome to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are spiritually weak and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who are broken and long for healing; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness and want to be satisfied; and to whomsoever will come. REFLECTIONS The Christian church traditionally celebrates Epiphany beginning on January 6 or the Sunday closest to that date and continuing until Lent begins. From a Greek word meaning “manifestation” or “showing forth”, Epiphany immediately follows the 12-day Christmas season and commemorates the appearing of Christ as the Savior and Light of the world. For this reason it is also known as the “Feast of Lights”. How we respond to his light – how we turn toward it and live in it – is the central concern of our lives. So church, arise, shine, for your light has come! (Isaiah 60:1). I am an historian, I am not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very center of history. Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history. — H.G. Wells Captivated by His beauty, Worthy tribute haste to bring; Let His peerless worth constrain thee, Crown Him now unrivaled King. — Ora Rowan — And a voice came down from heaven. It was clear and strong and loud so everyone could hear. 'This is my own Son. And I love him. I am very pleased with him,' God said. 'Listen to him.' Heaven had broken through. The Great Rescue had begun.... — The Jesus Storybook Bible ENTERING INTO GOD’S PRESENCE WORDS OF ENTRANCE Psalm 27:4 The LORD has shown forth his glory in the face of Jesus Christ: Come let us adore him! Gusenbach 1. Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature, Son of God and Son of Man! Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor, Thou, my soul's glory, joy, and crown. 2. Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring: Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, who makes the woeful heart to sing. 3. Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations! Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration, now and for evermore be thine. 1. To Christ the Lord let every tongue, its noblest tribute bring. When he’s the subject of the song, who can refuse to sing? Survey the beauties of his face, and on his glories dwell; Think of the wonder of his grace, and all his triumphs tell. 2. Majestic sweetness sits enthroned, upon his awful brow. His head with radiant glories crowned, his lips with grace o’erflow. No mortal can with him compare, among the sons of men; And fairer he than all the fair that fills the heavenly train. 3. He saw me plunged in deep distress, he fled to my relief. For me he bore the shameful cross, and carried all my grief; His hand a thousand blessings pours, upon my guilty head. His presence gilds my darkest hours, and guards my sleeping bed. Gracious Father, as Jesus was baptized in the Jordan, you declared aloud your extravagant delight in your one and only Son. Yet, at the cross you offered up this beloved Son as a sacrifice for our sins. Oh, what great cost for you to make us your sons and daughters! Father, please forgive us when we are cold to your love. Forgive us for letting familiarity rob us of our awe and wonder over you. Forgive us when we find you useful, but not beautiful. May the person and work of Jesus captivate us and cause us to turn away from our sins to something more beautiful. May we hear your voice assuring us today that we are your beloved children with whom you are well pleased. And may we believe it because of Jesus alone. Amen. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT John 3:16; Romans 8:32 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. And if God did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Christians, I declare to you the forgiveness of your sins in Jesus' name. Our help is in the name of the Lord, | The Maker of heaven and earth. O Lord, open our lips, | And our mouth will show forth your praise! DOXOLOGY GLORIA PATRI Arr. Digerness Glory be to the Father, glory be to the Son, Glory be to the Spirit, Three in One. As it was in the beginning it will be forever, amen. Amen. Amen. HOW GREAT THOU ART Stennett/Taylor Hine/Baloche 1. O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow'r thro'out the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art, how great thou art! PRAYER OF ENTRANCE HYMNS OF ENTRANCE TO CHRIST THE LORD LET EVERY TONGUE COMMUNAL CONFESSION OF SIN HYMN OF GRATITUDE & PRAISE One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. FAIREST LORD JESUS 4. To him I owe my life and breath, and all the joys I have. He makes me triumph over death, and saves me from the grave. To heav’n the place of his abode, he brings my weary feet; Shows me the glories of my God, and makes my joy complete. 2. And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin. ANNOUNCEMENTS RECEIVING GOD’S WORD THE GOSPEL LESSON MARK 1:1-11 English Standard Version [1] The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. [2] As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, [3] the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” [4] John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. [5] And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. [6] Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. [7] And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. [8] I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” -3- COMMUNION HYMN [9] In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. [10] And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. [11] And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” The Gospel of the Lord. | Praise to you, Lord Christ! HOW BEAUTIFUL 1. How beautiful: the hands that served The wine and the bread, and the sons of the earth. How beautiful: the feet that walked The long dusty roads and the hill to the cross. How beautiful! How beautiful! How beautiful is the body of Christ! PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SERMON MARK’S GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD GOD IS WITH US 2. How beautiful: the heart that bled That took all my sin and bore it instead. How beautiful: the tender eyes That chose to forgive and never despise. Chorus B. And as He laid down His life, we offer this sacrifice: That we will live just as He died, Willing to pay the price, willing to pay the price. 3. How beautiful: the radiant Bride Who waits for her Groom with His light in her eyes. How beautiful: when humble hearts give The fruit of pure lives so that others may live. Chorus Rev. Brent Harriman Area Coordinator, Reformed University Fellowship PRAYER OF COMMITMENT RECEPTION OF GIFTS HYMN OF RESPONSE HAST THOU HEARD HIM, SEEN HIM, KNOWN HIM? Rowan, alt. Twit/Littlepage 1. Hast thou heard Him, seen Him, known Him? | Is not thine a captured heart? Chief among ten thousand own Him; | Joyful choose the better part. Captivated by His beauty, | Worthy tribute haste to bring; Let His peerless worth constrain thee, | Crown Him now unrivaled King. 2. What can strip the seeming beauty | From the idols of the earth? Not a sense of right or duty, | But the sight of peerless worth. 3. 'Tis that look that melted Peter, | 'Tis that face that Stephen saw, 'Tis that heart that wept with Mary, | Can alone from idols draw. 4. How beautiful: the feet that bring The sound of good news, and the love of the King. How beautiful: the hands that serve The wine and the bread, and the sons of the earth. Refrain Chorus CLOSING HYMN Refrain DEDICATION OF GIFTS MY JESUS I LOVE THEE FEASTING AT GOD’S TABLE Those who have professed faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins within a church body and who have been baptized are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper here at Redeemer. We receive the Lord’s Supper worthily only if we bear in mind that Christ gave his body for the remission of our sins; it is his merit only that admits us to this table. It is dangerous to eat the body and blood of the Lord otherwise. For this reason, we ask those who do not meet the above conditions to refrain from eating. We do encourage you to come forward for prayer from one of our ministers if you desire it, or to remain seated and to pray and reflect on what you have heard and seen in the service. The Christian who doubts his standing before God should labor to have his doubts resolved. This brother or sister in Christ is especially encouraged to eat this feast, that he or she may be further strengthened in the faith. The Nicene Creed Christians, in whom do you believe? I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made: Who for us and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Lift up your hearts! We lift them up to the Lord! Let us give thanks to the Lord our God! It is good and right to do so! It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and singing: -4- Featherstone/Gordon 1. My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine; For Thee all the follies of sin I resign. My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou; If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now. 2. I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree. I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow; If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus ’tis now. 3. I’ll love Thee in life, and I’ll love Thee in death, I’ll praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath; And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow, If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus ’tis now. INVITATION TO THE TABLE CONFESSION OF FAITH Paris BENEDICTION 2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. | Amen. Please note that the center cup and inner circle contain grape juice, for those who desire it. Gluten free communion bread is available upon request. When the bread is passed, simply request the gluten free instead. While care is taken to keep both bread options separate to eliminate cross-contamination, if you have a severe gluten allergy, please use your discretion. There are also designated elders available to pray with you as you have need. If you are not taking Communion, you may come forward for prayer, or remain seated. We would especially encourage parents to bring their non-communing children to an elder for a prayer of blessing. We break bread in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit! And we declare the great mystery of faith: | Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; | Therefore let us keep the feast.
