Grand Rapids Area Council for the Humanities Biography Book Discussion for March 2010
Author and GVSU writing professor, Catherine Frerichs, will read from her newly published book, Desires
of the Heart: A Daughter Remembers Her Missionary Parents. Frerichs’s parents were missionaries in
Papua New Guinea from 1937-1975. She uses their letters and other research to understand why they
followed a God of love even though that meant sacrificing their children’s wellbeing. Questions and
conversation will follow on gender roles, vocation, religion, and encountering the “other.”
