 Completion of STA 215
 Understanding of how to use SPSS
 Data collection and entry skills
 Available Spring/Summer and Fall semesters 2013
Preferred Qualifications:
 Ability to read and speak Spanish
 Experience with diverse populations
 Interest in food studies, nutrition, geography, social work, related studies and/or
working with underserved populations
 At least Junior status
Must be self-directed and motivated. Willing to spend time in low-income areas of
Grand Rapids interacting with residents and workers in those areas.

entering data in Excel and SPSS. Will conduct some SPSS data analyses.
Required Qualifications:
 GPA 3.2 or better
 Grade of A in either PA 611 or STA 610
 Experience using SPSS
 Data collection and entry skills

Graduate Assistantship Position Description: Office for Community
Engagement
Community Engagement Graduate Research Assistant.
This full‐time GA position (20 hours per week) begins August 2013 and ends April 2014.
Full‐time graduate students in applicable degree programs (e.g., Higher Education, Public
Administration, Communication, Business) are eligible to apply.
The position pays a stipend of $4,000 per semester and a corresponding tuition waiver.

efforts. In the coming year, we will explore the feasibility of GVSU’s embarking on a signature
place--‐based initiative, as well as pilot supportive systems around smaller issue--‐based
projects.
Essential functions of the position:
 Assist to develop the case for place--‐based engagement with research and writing
 Gather and analyze data to determine magnet issues and the ideal neighborhood for
place--‐ based engagement
 Assist with university and community outreach
 Assist with overall design and selection of university/community partnership networks
for pilot projects
 Provide project management support
 Assist with grant writing and development of sustainable funding
 Maintain university communications through website updates and monthly newsletter
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
 Passion for community development and systems change







Strong research knowledge and skills in literature reviews, interviewing, and analyzing
qualitative and quantitative data
Ability to understand and integrate the cultural aspects of GVSU into planning
Excellent writing and communication skills, including web design and updates
Experience with planning and implementing projects
Experience with project management
Ability to work with complex problems for which there is no map, and to think critically
and creatively
Ability to work closely with supervisor in a complementary manner

result of a partnership between the City of Grand Rapids
and Grand Valley State University’s Sustainable
Community Development Initiative (SCDI). Members of

SCOPE OF WORK:
Members of the Transformation Research & Analysis Team
will work closely with the City’s departments to research
and analyze areas of interest identified as vital to
transforming their operation or delivery model.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Working on a wide range of research projects and
employing a range of different research methodologies
• Writing confidential research analysis on both individual
and departmental requested projects
• Working with supervisors to prioritize work as
necessary

• Providing information on what research is already
available in the specific policy area
• Producing both written and oral briefs, based on reviews

City of Grand Rapids and Seeds of Promise Internship
BACKGROUND:
A student internship agreement exists between the City of Grand Rapids and Grand
Valley State University’s Sustainable Community Development Initiative (SCDI) in
Brooks College. The Office of Energy and Sustainability (OES) at the City of Grand Rapids
is seeking an intern to assist with various duties and tasks including reporting for Seeds
of Promise (SoP). Seeds of Promise is a 501c3 grassroots community sustainability
partnership organization that is place-based, servant lead, and value-driven. The
organization works toward balancing a community’s triple bottom line by measuring
and charting the economic, social, and environmental processes and progress within the
community of ~2000 residents.

Working hours:
20 per week
Compensation:
$10 per hour
Duration:
Throughout the academic year. Work will continue through the summer
terms, if the candidate is available.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The candidate will become a member of the team currently in place at the City of
Grand Rapids. He or she will be required to provide the following types of service
offerings. The list is not all inclusive:
Office of Energy and Sustainability:
 Working with the supervisor to prioritize work as necessary
 Discussing and agreeing on project requirements with the supervisor and
agreeing the terms of reference for research
 Creating promotional documents for the Office, including progress reports,
brochures, etc.
 Drafting memorandums, emails, and other documents
 Ensuring that the City Sustainability Plan and Progress Reports are updated
 Entering Customer First Response data into the SharePoint platform
 Entering energy data into Portfolio Manager
 Helping with phone calls relative to the Customer First Response (CFR)
Initiative
 Providing support for & performing analyses for the Sustainability Plan,
Transformation Investment Plan, Community Resiliency, and Climate
Mitigation/Adaptation strategies
 Helping to prepare Power Point Presentations for the Office of Energy and
Sustainability and the Mayor to present at national and international
conferences





Assisting with and presenting information to large groups, such as City
Commission and the Executive Management staff
Researching best practices for potential strategies and plans related to
energy management, sustainability, community resiliency, and other projects
as required
Updating OES Twitter daily
Arranging meetings (inviting the individuals, preparing documents, etc.)
Attending webinars and conference calls
Seeds of Promise:
 Maintain the SoP website
 Maintain an ongoing community stakeholder assessment using the
Community Research Institute (CRI) resource database at GVSU, as well as
other local data sources
 Continue development and monitoring of sustainable neighborhood impact
measurements for SoP
 Continue ongoing development and reporting of the Seeds of Promise
Assessment, Progress and Impact Report
 Help maintain active mailing lists and contact information for key endorsing
partners
 Help with other sustainable development project and activities as assigned
 Attend key SoP meetings
