Topics include the importance of standards to industry, fundamentals of standards development, case studies on IEEE
802.11n (WiFi) and IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Standards, and an interactive multi-hour consensus-building exercise.

Dr. James Irvine is a Reader in the EEE Department at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. His research interests include resource management and security for wireless systems, and he works as Academic Co-ordinator within the
Mobile VCE programme. Prior to this he worked on the ACTS MOSTRAIN project providing communication services to high speed trains. He holds four patents, with three more being pursued, and has authored two books.
Technical Programme Chair of VTC2004-Spring in Milan, Dr Irvine was elected in 2002 to the Board of the IEEE VTS, where he is chair of the VTS Technical
Advisory Committee, and President for 2008-09. He is currently Chair of the IEEE Standards
Education Committee.
David Law is a distinguished engineer for HP Networking and has worked on the specification and development of Ethernet products since 1989. In this role, David has held a number of leadership positions as a member of the
IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group and currently serves as chair of IEEE
802.3. David is also a member of the IEEE-SA Standards Board, chair of the
IEEE-SA Standards Board Patent Committee (PatCom) and vice-chair of
IEEE Standards Education Committee. David holds a Bachelor of Engineering
(Honours) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Strathclyde University.
He is a senior member of the IEEE.
Adrian Stephens is a Principal Engineer in Intel's Connectivity Standards and Technology group (part of the Mobile Communications group). His focus is on developing IEEE 802.11 standards. He is a Vice-Chair of IEEE 802.11 and is its technical editor. He is a member of IEEE-SA RevCom and the
Standards Board. He coordinated (internally and externally) Intel's MAC proposal for IEEE 802.11n. He managed an industry group that successfully proposed an initial draft for the IEEE 802.11ac amendment. Adrian has over
20 years of product development and research experience working for industry and government. Adrian received a B.A. ('77) and a Ph.D. from
Cambridge University. He is a senior member of the IEEE.
