Recipes for KCl and K2SO4 Stock Solution
for extract of soil NO3--N, NH4+-N, DOC, and DON
KCl (2 mol, Potassium chloride)
K2SO4 (0.5 mol, Potassium sulfate)
For 1 L of KCl solution: add 149.1 g to 1 L DI H2O
For 2 L of KCl solution: add 298.2 g to 2 L DI H2O
For 1 L of K2SO4 solution: add 87.13 g to 1 L DI H2O
For 2 L of K2SO4 solution: add 174.3 g to 2 L DI H2O
Supporting Calculations
K = 39.0983
Cl = 35.4527
KCl molecular weight: 74.55 g/mol
Supporting Calculations
K2 = 2(39.0983)
S = 32.066
O4 = 4(15.9994)
K2SO4 molecular weight: 174.26 g/mol
1 L x 2mol x 74.55 g = 149.1 g

Weigh out required amount of desired chemical.
Pour into 1L or 2L volumetric flask depending on the desired volume using a funnel.
Fill up to 1L or 2L line with DI H2O.
Insert glass stopper and hold it in, while gently mixing liquid from side to side.
Mix until all crystals are dissolved.
Refill with DI H2O up to 1L or 2L line if necessary.
Store in respective containers with the correct labels.
Put a piece of lab tape on container with your initials and the date the solution was made.
Safety Note:
Always remember proper lab safety! Wear eye protection, lab coat, gloves, and closed-toe shoes while mixing
any chemicals!
