Mixbook: Rocks & Minerals For this activity, you will create a Mixbook animated photo album with images and text to describe the three types of rock classifications and how they can be transformed into other types through the rock cycle. In addition, you will describe the two classes of minerals and the three basic ways minerals form. Standards: SES1. Students will investigate the composition and formation of Earth systems, including the Earth’s relationship to the solar system. e. Identify the transformations and major reservoirs that make up the rock cycle, hydrologic cycle, carbon cycle, and other important geochemical cycles. SES2. Students will understand how plate tectonics creates certain geologic features, materials, and hazards. d. Associate specific plate tectonic settings with the production of particular groups of igneous and metamorphic rocks and mineral resources. You must include the following in your Mixbook: Title & Credits pages 2-page spread for each rock type with the following text: o Name of rock type o How this type of rock forms o How this type of rock can be transformed into the other types o At least three common examples o At least three images representing each rock type along with captions 2-page spread for each mineral classification with the following text: o Name of mineral classification o Chemical composition and structure of the mineral o Mineral’s major characteristics and special features o At least three common examples o At least three images representing each mineral type along with captions 2-page spread for each way minerals form with the following text: o Name of mineral formation o How this occurs o How scientists use each processes in the lab to grow synthetic minerals o At least three common examples of synthetic minerals o At least three images representing each synthetic mineral along with captions Your MUST include references for all information and photos you include. Use this sheet as a guide to help plan for your project. In each box, fill in the appropriate information.
