TIER 1 PROVINCIALS
Teams from Ball Hockey Edmonton won gold & silver at the recent Tier One Provincial Championships that were
held in St. Albert. The BHE Edmonton Savages won their second straight Tier 1 gold medal by knocking off
their city rivals, the BHE Edmonton Whalers, by a score of 3-0 in the Championship Final. The 2014 Men’s Tier
One Provincials, held in St. Albert, saw the best Tier One teams from Edmonton & Calgary play for the Alberta
Tier One title. Teams did not disappoint … they put on as good show.
After round-robin play, the BHE Whalers finished 1st and earned the bye to the gold medal game. The Semifinal was a re-match from the 2013 Tier One final, as the BHE Edmonton Savages edged out the Calgary Phantoms
2-1 in what was probably the best game of the weekend. The win moved the Savages into the gold medal game to
meet their city rival BHE Whalers. The gold medal game belonged to the goaltenders … both Tim Barlow
(Savages) and Carson Schreiber (Whalers) were outstanding in a game that saw a lot of power-play chances. In
the end it was Barlow posting the shutout as the BHE Edmonton Savages became repeat Alberta champs with a 3-0
win. Both teams earned the right to represent Alberta at the 2015 Canadian National Championship, which will
be held in Ottawa.
TIER 2 PROVINCIALS
The BHE Edmonton Raging Bulls were on a mission at the Wild Rose Ball Hockey Provincial Championships for
Tier 2. They were looking to get the double-double … a city title and the Provincial title as well. The
Raging Bulls had a tough round-robin, but their 2-1-1 record secured 3rd place and a spot in the semi-final.
They met the pre-Provincial favorites, the Grande Prairie Ballers in the semi-final, and they came to play. A
5-0 spanking pushed the Raging Bulls into the Championship final.
The Raging Bulls met the Grande Prairie Wolfpac in the gold-medal final. It was a tight game that went right
down to the end, but the Raging Bulls beat the host team 3-2 to claim their first ever Provincial Tier 2
title. Forward Darren McClintock scored the game winner, and goalie Dave Yarham was outstanding for the
Bulls. With their win, they have secured a spot at the 2015 Canadian Western “B” Championships that take
place in Brandon, Manitoba. No other Tier 2 team from BHE attended Provincials.
TIER 3 PROVINCIALS
It was redemption time for the BHE Edmonton Cobras, who have been close in the past but could never win gold
at the Provincials. The BHE Cobras went a perfect 6-0-0 at the Tier 3 Provincials, including a very
convincing 6-1 win over the Grande Prairie Chaos in the gold medal game. The Cobras outscored their
opposition 31-10 over the 6 games, and deserved the win. Adam Berg was the hero in the final, as he scored a
hat-trick to help the Cobras clinch.
The Edmonton Cobras will also be participating at the 2015 Westerns, as they will compete play in the
“Western C” championships. The BHE Edmonton Soldiers also attended the Tier 3 Provincials, but they finished
2-3-0 overall, finishing in 3rd place. The Soldiers Bronze medal finished matched their bronze medal at the
2013 Provincial Championships.
TIER 4 PROVINCIALS
The BHE Edmonton Redline capped off a great season, as they captured the Men’s Tier 4 gold medal. The Redline
finished with a perfect 5-0-0 record during the Wild Rose Ball Hockey Provincial Championships. Their semifinal game was an 8-1 thumping victory over Gr. Prairie, so one would assume they would roll in the gold
medal game. That did not happen!
The Wainwright Muskrats (from the Highway 13 league) came prepared, and it was a tight game right down to the
end. The game was tied 3-3 late in the contest, and with 1:05 left, Scott Sanderson scored the game winner.
The final score was 5-3 for Redline (empty net goal) and the double-double was complete … the city title and
the Provincial title. The Edmonton Red Line outscored their opponents 35-7 during the 5 games at Provincials.
Goaltender Andrew Nemeth only allowed 7 goals against and was very good for Redline. The Redline qualified
for the 2015 Westerns in Brandon, as they will compete for the Men’s Western “D” Championships.
The BHE Edmonton Farm Team also played at the Provincials in Tier 4. Their short bench hurt them, as they
finished with a 1-2-0 record and they did not qualify for the playoff round. On a positive note, Farm Team
did win their last game 6-4 over the Metro Edmonton Rush. Any win over the city rivals is a good win!
