Support for children and young people with special
educational needs in Haringey – our ‘local offer’
Educational Psychology Service
What our service does
We provide high quality psychological support to children, young people and their families to
improve their educational and wellbeing outcomes.
We work in partnership with families, children’s centres, early years settings, schools and other
agencies to improve their understanding of a child’s educational, developmental and psychological
needs and how to meet these needs. Sometimes we work directly with children and young people.
We provide support to children and young people through:

School/setting based consultations with staff and parents/carers for children who have
emerging or ongoing special educational needs. We will help your child’s school or early
years settings to put together a programme of support for your child

individual assessment and advice on appropriate intervention programmes for children and
young people who have complex or more severe educational needs

group-based programmes with children in small groups or with the whole class

staff training and development in schools.
We also offer workshops to parents and carers to help develop their skills and confidence.
Where service is located and the areas it covers
Our main office is located in the Haringey Professional Development Centre, Downhill’s Park Road
London N17 6AR.
All children’s centres, primary, special and secondary schools in Haringey have an allocated
Educational Psychologist attached to them who visits the school regularly.
Who our service provides for
We provide educational psychological services to the following priority groups in Haringey:

Children and young people going through a Education Health Care Needs assessment

Children in Care and Looked After by Haringey Local Authority

Children in out-of borough independent special schools

Children with a statement of special educational needs or an Education, Health & Care Plan
(EHCP)

Children with special educational needs or disabilities who are home educated
We provide advice and support for Haringey children and young people from birth to 25 years old
with additional educational, social, emotional and developmental needs. Children and young people
are referred to us by Haringey schools and early year’s settings. We cover all types of special
educational needs and disabilities.
We provide advice and support for pre-school children with special needs who are not in an Early
Years setting or who attend a private, voluntary or community setting through referrals.
We also provide support and advice to children and young people in the immediate aftermath of a
traumatic incident (for example, the sudden death or serious injury of a member of the school
community such as a parent, pupil or staff member). This support is called ‘critical incident support’.
You can ask for this support through your child’s school or early years setting.
How a child or young person can start using the service
Most requests for our involvement come through schools, early year’s settings, children’s centres
and the local authority. We do not accept referrals directly from GPs or other agencies but they can
refer to us through your child’s school/early year’s setting/children’s centre. .
How decisions are made about eligibility for our service
Your child’s school or children’s centre will, in the first instance, discuss their concerns about your
child with an Educational Psychologist. If the concern cannot be resolved in this discussion,
parents/carers will be invited to meet with the educational psychologist and school staff for further
discussion of the issues and how to manage them.
How we communicate with service users and how they are involved in decision
making/planning
We communicate with service users through face-to-face meetings and through email, letter and
telephone.
We work through interpreters whenever needed.
We will only become directly involved with your child with your permission. At our first meeting
with you, we will listen to your hopes and concerns for your child and, together with you and your
child’s school, early years setting or children’s centre, we will plan support for your child.
We conduct regular service evaluation of the Educational Psychology Services with all our schools.
We are currently working in collaboration with the Markfield Information, Advice and Support
Service, Haringey Involve and others to seek the views of parents, carers, children and young people
to strengthen the quality, accessibility, relevance and responsiveness of our service.
You can find out more about our service from the leaflets in your child’s school or children’s centre.
How accessible our service is
Educational psychologists mainly work in early year’s settings, children’s centres and schools. These
are accessible to all.
Training our staff have had in supporting children and young people with
special educational needs and disabilities
All educational psychologists in our team have had specialist postgraduate training in educational
psychology and are legally registered with the Health and Care Professions Council – www.hpcuk@org.
All team members are required to keep a log of their professional development to ensure they
update their knowledge and skills.
