FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Central State University awarded $600K NSF grant to establish research center
for cyber sensors networks
WILBERFORCE, Ohio (September 18, 2012) – Central State University (CSU) has
received a $600K grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a
sharable Self-optimizing and Cooperative Control Cyber Sensors Network platform. The
grant undergirds the university’s commitment to increase its research capacity with the
goal of developing a focused research center in two years.
The construction of a sharable platform for all sensor-oriented applications would include
but not be limited to persistent surveillance on human behavior and the tracking of
environmental phenomenon. The project will help CSU develop the proper research
infrastructure to establish a Center for Research Excellence in Science and Technology or
similar research center.
At the core of the project are a multidisciplinary research topic involving image/video
processing, algebraic techniques, partial differential equations, statistics physics, data
fusion, cooperative control and optimization. Further, the research will couple satellite
imagery and climate data to better understand the cause and effect of climatic change on
irrigated agriculture development in the Lower Colorado River Basin. It will also develop
provably correct tracking algorithms for human performance with the desired outcome
(in both applications) of increasing the situational awareness of the sensor network for
the identification of specific behavior and or events.
“This research project will strengthen the research credentials of our university’s faculty
as well as the resources and facilities of science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) departments, thereby creating the foundation for Central State to
become a competitive research institution,” said Dr. Kimberly Kendricks, Assistant
Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Department who
serves as the principal investigator.
