Edmonton Nordic's Pearce Hanna shoots clean for Canada in World Junior
Championships Relay. Presque Isle, Maine, World Youth and Junior
Championships, 2014
When Alberta biathlete Stuart Harden (RMR, Jr. Men) was injured, biathlete Pearce
Hanna (ENSC, Youth Men) was chosen to be the fourth man on the Canadian Junior Men
Team. Racing up a category against young men three years older, Pearce nevertheless
held his own to anchor the Canadian Team to a place in the Flower Ceremony. This sixth
place finish was not a best ever, but it was one of the highest finishes recorded recently
by Canada at the World Junior Biathlon Champs. Pearce cleaned Prone, but had to do a
penalty lap after standing. His great effort and ski speed kept the Team in the race. This
result, plus the Silver medal earned by the other three Youth Men in their relay, bodes
well for future World Championship and Olympic results.
Pearce Hanna competes in Biathlon World Youth Championships
Pearce Hanna made his first appearance on the world stage yesterday, representing
Canada at the World Youth Championships in Presque Isle, Maine. Pearce finished 29th,
1:38 behind. Aidan Millar, Canmore, was 9th, 43 seconds back.

Feb 22 - Calforex #5 - Camrose
After a cold and brutally windy practice day, mother
nature eased up a little in Camrose, where it was only cold on Saturday. Postponing the
Zero and starting the youngest classes late in the day, the Camrose Ski Club engineered a
full slate of competition on very good trails, including air rifles.
ENSC entered athletes
in 12 categories, and earned 12 medals: 6 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze. Notable
achievements, Nate Gerwing with David Singleton and then Bryan Singleton with Ray
Cislo, were 1, 2 in their respective categories. ENSC put two athletes on the podium in
one other category, Sr. Girls, where Marin Cislo and Tia Bennett put together good
shooting and fast skiing to finish 1st and 3rd.

Recreational Ski Trip this Sunday - Devon Nordic Ski Club. This trip will be led by
Mike Stern who can be contacted at mikestern@telus.net
Mike plans to ski in the Family Loppet at Devon which starts at 10 am (registration at
9am). Therefore he will be leaving Edmonton at 8 am but will be happy to lead the
recreational ski after the loppet. I suggest those who wish to ski should meet at Bonnie
Doon Shopping Centre (SE corner) at 9am and carpool from there to the Devon Golf
Course where you can meet Mike after the loppet. Alternatively you could go early and
participate in the loppet which is very low-key and costs only $10. This is a good event to
try as an introduction to loppets. I believe the event is "classic only" and is only 10 km in
length (or 5 km if you prefer). See this link for more info

Local Heroes - Calforex Volunteers Make it Happen
ENSC Volunteers: These folks
made it happen, working tirelessly, and mostly behind the scenes, the club's volunteers
made the Edmonton Calforex possible (with a little financial help from SISU and the
casino funds, which paid for the grooming equipment).
After Saturday's melt down, anticipating the big freeze, and with sage snow advice from
Bjorn Taylor (SWC groomer and Bears coach) Dave Bennett and Bryan Singleton stayed
up until 02:00 to catch the snow at just the right time to re-groom. This, coupled with
continuous re-grooming from Zero Dark Thirty by Dave and Greg Falkenstein, in windy 15 weather, until the race started at 10:00, saved the trails. Our Calforex survived to
enjoy the sunny, calm, -11 weather of mid day congeniality.
Although the groomers were a very visible part of the volunteer effort, Edmonton Nordic
Masters Competitor Robin Bailie captured the moment in his thank you email: "The
measure of a club isn't in the depth or quality of the racers, although we do quite well on
that score too, it's in the depth and quality of the volunteers and supporters. By my
estimation we have a very enviable club".
Take a bow guys!
Results information can be found for SATURDAY and SUNDAY
Hot Times at the Range: Athletes and Parents Rise to the Challenge
Biathletes, parents, friends and family skipped practice to become snow farmers on
Saturday. An impressive amount of work was done on the Range and stadium
areas.
Our firing line is now protected from the sun by a giant Tyvek-rifle rack shade. A
huge volume of snow was farmed and moved onto the newly-shaded firing line. With this
reinforcment and the well groomed trails Biathlon will thrive through the warm spell.
Many thanks and appreciation should also go to our dedicated volunteer groomers. The
trails, stadium and range have been groomed and packed so well and many times, they
are holding up under to the warm temperatures. With careful use of the facility, we will
be in good shape for the Calforex on Jan 25-26
Recreational Ski Trip to Chickakoo
There will be a recreational ski trip this coming
Sunday morning to Chickakoo Ski Area. We will meet at the NE corner of the
Westmount Shopping Centre at 9 am and carpool from there. We will ski for a few hours
before lunch and possibly another hour after lunch depending on conditions. Please pack
a lunch and drinks as there is nothing available at Chickakoo. Please let me know by
email or text (780 7690 3329) if you plan to come. If it is necessary to change plans at the
last minute due to conditions, I will try to contact you on Saturday evening or early on
Sunday morning.
All are welcome to participate in these recreational trips, you do not
have to be an ENSC member. Skiers should be about "intermediate" level or strong
beginner.

Troll in the Park Loppet To all those who volunteered their time and effort both

Calforex1/NorAm 1: Canmore, Nov. 23-24
We braved the Edmonton snows and were
rewarded by clear roads from Red Deer on. The wax gurus found their groove again and
life on the Range smoothed out on day two. The nice weather helped. Meanwhile, the
ENSC athletes were acquitting themselves well on the piste. An outstanding performance
by Pearce Hanna, shooting 10/10 in the first race and winning by minutes, set the pace.
More medals were won in various categories during the weekend, most gold, some silver
and the occasional bronze: Marin Cislo, Tia Bennett, Sam Poon, Erin Bennett, followed
by the old folks, Robin Baillie, Bryan Singleton, Julia Keenleside and Ray Cislo who
won multiple medals. Honourable mentions to Brianna Daly and Graeme Torrie, who
survived their very first Biathlon races at this NorAm - Graeme commemorating the
occasion by competing in his Dad’s Leduc Biathlon uniform. Erik put on an amazing
display of fence jumping and shovel-bogganing; shooting, not so much. A good shakedown cruise.

Callum Wins Velli Niinimaa Best Shot Award
At the end of September, Biathlon Alberta held its AGM and announced the awards for
the 2012-2013 Calforex Cup season. This year, ENSC again won the Velli Niinimaa Best
Shot award for air rifles (Under 15).
This award goes to the athlete that shot clean (5 for 5) more times than anyone else. Last
year the prize went to Callum Linklater, this year it was won by Helena Linklater (see
picture - Helena is the cute one). Kudos to Bears coaches Nicola Baaker and Eric
Wolsey, who trained both these super shots, and to Don and Melanie, who provided the
genes!
GOODBYE NICOLA AND THANK YOU
A happy, busy, and slightly sad day at the ENSC Biathlon Centre. Happy, because we set
an attendance record for a single practice, sad, because we had to say goodbye to Nicola
Baaker - but the chocolate cake was great.
Nicola has been our lead Biathlon Bears coach for the last two seasons while she
completed her Masters at the U of A. She was studying forest technology, comparing
silviculture techniques in Canada and Finland. Alas, her adventures in the woods, first in
BC, incidentally coaching Bears in Smithers, and then in Finland, led to romance and a
marriage proposal. Finland's gain is definitely our loss. We will Miss you Nicola Baaker;
come back soon
