Current Research:
My current research employs time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy, which allows us to probe
the behavior of different molecular systems after they are photoexcited. Understanding the various
processes that occur upon photoexcitation enables us to design molecular systems that more efficiently
produce a desired response. These responses can vary from intramolecular photo-oxidation or –reduction
to “spin teleportation”.
In addition to studies at room temperature, we can change the thermal environment of the molecular
systems. This allows us to correlate many of our optical results with the results of other techniques, such
as EPR where it is often necessary to cool the sample. We have the ability to probe dynamics on
timescales as short as 150 femtoseconds (1.5 x10-13 s) and as long as 5 microseconds (5.0 x10-6 s) at
temperatures between 353K (176 F or 80 C) to 77K (-321 F or -196 C).
