The goal for star council remains the same
as last year 8 new members and 3
insurance members. We are going to try to
get the year off to a good start by recruiting
at St. Stephen’s Family Fest August 1 and
at St. Zachary August Fest August 9. Your
District Deputy is going to try and make the
presence of the Knights known at St.
Stephens by agreeing to have water
balloons tossed at him for one hour and
then the District Deputy reserves the right to
name the next Knight for another hour. Also
we will be selling roasted corn at the St.
Stephens August Fest.

From the Editor

As you will note from the Header our
Financial Secretary Alan V. Motz passed
away while in Florida battling several
illnesses. As Al would say he did not pass
away “He went to his final reward.” Al will
be missed by the Council. Al has been not
only a Knight and a friend to me, He has
been my mentor. He has led me to where I
am with the Knights today. Please pray for
the family of Alan V. Motz. Al, I miss you
already.
From Your District Deputy
At this time I would like to reach out to our
younger members who haven’t been to a
meeting lately. You may have had a bad
experience with the council or don’t like
what we plan to do. My plea to you is to
come back and give us another chance.
Feel free to present your views and suggest
other events. No view or suggestion is a
bad idea unless “It is not presented.” You
are vital to the Council and it is my goal as
your District Deputy to make you feel
welcome again. Please come out to our
next meeting August 14th in St. Zachary
Parish Room at 7:30 p.m. It is my goal to
turn a new leaf on the Council and no longer
see the Knights as the group that marches
in parades with cool regalia or the group
who sells Tootsie Rolls once a year. Please
come back and find out what you have been

From Your Field Agent
As a member of this council, you know
how important spouses can be to the
charitable works of the Order. If you’re
married, your wife is probably involved
in a few of the many events that happen
each fraternal year. This support adds
great value and impact to what a council
can achieve.

When the Order was founded in 1882,
Father Michael J. McGivney and the
other brave men were setting out to
protect Catholic families, but especially
wives and children. Today, we remain
committed to this mission by offering
insurance products and fraternal
benefits designed with that goal in mind.
One specific policy rider that you may

Fun Facts About August
August is known for many things,
including the dog days of summer,
National Watermelon Day (Aug. 3) and
National Smile Week (Aug. 5-11). But
there are many other fun facts associated
with summer’s last full month.
August is named after Augustus Caesar,
founder and the first emperor of the
Roman Empire, who was posthumously
adopted by his maternal great-uncle
Gaius Julius Caesar.
This rider is available on most
permanent and Discoverer plans
purchased at standard rates by a
member and his wife on the same day.
When both spouses apply, the rider
provides for waiver of premiums on the
spouse’s contract in the event of the
insured’s death. Best of all, for members
and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver
can be added for no charge. The rider
stays in effect until the spouse attains
age 65 or certain other triggering events
occur.
........................
In the early Roman calendar, August was
actually the sixth month of the year. It was
originally 30 days in length, but an extra
day was added so that it would equal the

number of days in July, which was named
after Julius Caesar.
August has two birthstones: peridot and
sardonyx. Peridot is among the oldest
known gemstones and is green in color.
Sardonyx, which is lesser-known, is a
white- and brown-banded gemstone once
believed to have mystical powers.
The official flower for August is the
gladiolus. These vertical-growing flowers
were named from the Latin "gladius,"
meaning a sword.
Fans of Elvis Presley mourn each Aug.
16th, the day the famed singer died in
1977.
On Aug. 24th in 79 A.D., the volcano
Mount Vesuvius erupted, destroying the
city of Pompeii and others.
People born in August fall under the sun
zodiac signs of Leo and Virgo. Leos are

stolen from the Louvre Gallery and not
recovered for two years.
Although civil rights activist Martin Luther
King, Jr., is honored in January, when he
was born, he is best known for his famed
"I have a dream" speech, which was given
on Aug. 28, 1963.
The month of August is often referred to
as the "dog days of summer" but not
because of pet pooches. It has to do with
the star Sirius, also known as the dog
star, which rose at the same time as
sunrise during the month of August in
ancient Roman times.
