Reporting Relationships: Reports to Branch Manager or to Librarian or Area Librarian designated as supervisor by Branch Manager. Custodians receive technical assistance from

Maintenance Department staff. Contacts normally include Branch Manager, branch staff, maintenance staff at Headquarters, delivery staff, contractors or vendors working in the branch, other custodians, and the public.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Overall Purpose of Job: This is manual work of limited complexity in cleaning and maintaining library buildings; caring for and maintaining grounds, including basic care of lawns and landscaping; exterior maintenance, including snow and ice control; and performing minor maintenance and repair tasks, such as changing light bulbs and limited emergency adjustment to buildings and fixtures.

Provides assistance during building and weather emergencies, as requested, to return building to safe and accessible condition for public and staff. Work is performed under the direction of the supervisor and Branch Manager.

Minimum Qualifications: One year of general custodial experience and educational training that results in knowledge of simple arithmetic and a reading and writing level necessary for successful job performance; or an equivalent combination of experience and training that has provided the knowledge, abilities, and skills listed below.

Necessary Special Requirement: Possession of a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Maryland and a good driving record.

A. Interior Building Maintenance

 Cleans and maintains interior of library building by performing established routines at designated regular intervals (e.g., daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) or as needed or directed by supervisor.

 Empty all trash and recycling containers, replacing liners and placing waste/recycling in designated pick-up places; clean trash cans

 Vacuum all carpeting, walk-off mats, and upholstery and check for and report any worn areas

 Spot clean walls, doors, glass, carpeting - remove any stains found with approved cleaner

 Quarterly clean all glass with T-handle

 Clean tile or slate or other uncarpeted floors to include mop (wet or dry); and strip, scrub and refinish tile or slate floors

 Dust and polish all furniture, equipment, woodwork, window sills, vents, radiators, cabinets, fixtures, book stacks and shelving, countertops, and other horizontal surfaces as appropriate

 Clean all glass surfaces – entrance doors, lights, mirrors, display cases, windows, etc.

 Clean and sanitize all bathroom walls, floors, and fixtures

 Dust exterior, clean screen, and vacuum keyboard of computers – use canned air for hard-to-reach areas

 Dust/clean telephones, printers, fax machines, copiers, etc.

 Flush floor drains

 Review meeting room schedule; set up and break down meeting room for programs and public use

B. Exterior Building Maintenance

 Remove trash and other debris

 Check pipes and downspouts

 Check roof, inspecting that all drains are clean of debris and noting any puddling and/or damage

 Remove snow and ice and take other snow and ice control measures

 Sweep walkways, parking lots as appropriate

 Wash down exterior areas as appropriate

 Perform light weeding

 Edge lawns and beds

 Mow and maintain lawns

 Remove leaves and other yard waste

 May provide basic care of plantings of shrubs and flowers – watering, trimming, fertilizing, mulching, etc.

 Remove graffiti

 Take appropriate actions to rid building of nesting insects and mice

C. Maintenance and Repair

 Erect and move displays, furniture, fixtures, shelving, equipment, etc

 Keep maintenance check on library building and grounds and report maintenance needs to supervisor/Branch Manager or maintenance department according to established guidelines

 Walk through and inspect lights

 Replace light bulbs

 Unclog stopped drains

 Check HVAC system for proper operation within thermostat levels and perform routine preventive maintenance on these systems as instructed

 Perform basic preventive maintenance and minor repairs on cleaning and grounds equipment such as vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, edgers, etc.

 Care for and clean tools

 Fill soap, tissue and towel dispensers with supplies

 Maintain cleaning and grounds maintenance supplies and materials

 Perform light painting

 Inventory custodial supplies; order as needed to maintain stock

 Post banners, signs, as instructed

D. Safety

 Test/check fire alarm, fire extinguishers, and other safety/emergency equipment and supplies regularly

 Perform safety check of automatic doors

 Test security gate and door counter

 Follow library system’s safety standards

 Identify and report safety hazards; recommend safety improvements

 Open building; may close and secure building as requested

E. Other Duties as Assigned

 Empty book drop as necessary

 May clear book drop materials from patron records

 May drive van or other vehicle in carrying out field assignments or in delivering library materials on a substitute basis

 Substitutes for custodians at other library buildings as needed

 Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class of work

ACCOUNTABILITIES: Work is evaluated through observation for adherence to approved procedures and inspection of the general quality of performance and the condition of the building and grounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1.

Physical Demands: Performs a variety of tasks in a single day; standing, being on feet for most of the day. Many tasks require constant bending, stooping, and stretching. May work in awkward or cramped positions or on ladders. Lifts and moves weights of 50+ lbs.

2. Emotional Demands: Some pressure related to sustained periods of high-volume activity and multiple deadlines.

3. Social Environment: Each work day usually includes periods worked alone and periods where work is performed when others are around.

4. Physical Environment: Usually works inside in normal heat and light. Some work outdoors

(often for sustained periods). Outdoor work may be in adverse weather such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, rain, snow, ice, sleet, etc. Uses chemical cleaners. Some tasks may be dirty or noisy. Some exposure to disagreeable odors.

5.

Mental Demands: This is work that is carried out in conformity with established routines which vary according to seasonal or other circumstances. Departures from normal procedures usually are in response to instructions or requests from the supervisor, Branch Manager, branch staff, or maintenance department.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS NOTE: The incumbent of this position is considered on-call emergency personnel and may be required to respond to emergencies or perform duties outside of regular work hours.
