LAHS COURSE INFORMATION SHEET 2013-2014 Course Title: AP Latin Instructors: Krista Greksouk UC/CSU: Yes Textbook and other learning resource: A Vergil Workbook; A Caesar Workbook What Students Can Expect From This Course Course Description: Students will finish their study of Classical Latin. Students will complete daily translation assignments. They will demonstrate their comprehension of Latin via Weekly Assessment, translation exams, multiple choice exams, and AP essay responses. They will apply their knowledge of Ancient History to the literature they are reading. They will arrive to class prepared and with all materials necessary for the lesson. By May, students will be prepared for the AP Latin Exam. This course is academically rigorous and requires dedication and enthusiasm. Assessment and Grading: Per BP/AR 5121, teachers of the same course are expected to align their grading and assessment practices in the following areas: (a) the weight of assignments for the various categories of assessment, (b) homework policies, late/make up policies, opportunities for revision, extra credit and grading scales, (c) degrees of proficiency. In addition, the policy specifies that “group work is to be considered an essential part of the learning experience, and that grades earned through group participation are to reflect an individual student’s achievement on a designated academic standard and to be awarded to individuals rather than to groups of students. Extra credit is to be given only when it supports student achievement of academic standards for the course and when it is equitable for all students. 1. COMPONENTS OF THE GRADE 15% Homework: Homework is to prepare for class rather than to practice new skills. Students will have their in-class translations and at-home translations checked daily. Since this is an AP class, students should be prepared for their assessments to count for a larger portion of their grade. 20% Classwork: The vast majority of translation will be happening in class; students are expected to be active group members and participate in daily discussions. Daily Vocab checks at the end of class every day. 30% Assessments: Similar to the quizzes in Latin 1 & 2, the weekly assessments are a way to check to ensure everyone is keeping up with the reading list. These will include: oral translations with the teacher, multiple choice quizzes, direct translation, and spot questions. Students will know what sections are being assessed; those sections will be from what we read that week. 35% Exams: Students take exams frequently in AP Latin. Exams are styled in the same way as the AP Exam, including: multiple choice, translation, sight reading, spot questions, and essay writing. Some exams (essay writing) will be take-home exams. HOW PROFICIENCY IS DETERMINED: Assessments, in class translations, and essay responses demonstrate proficiency. What Is Expected Of The Student Daily Assignments: Students will have daily homework assignments which students MUST complete in order to keep up with the material and be prepared for class. Students will also be doing daily in-class translations and frequent essay responses. Students will also complete all homework assignments by the designated due date. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT ACCEPTED FOR CREDIT (exception: excused absences). Attendance: ABSENCES: An “unexcused absence” is an absence in excess of a 30-minute period occurring in a given class. Students may not exceed 14 unexcused absences across their entire schedule. A full day, unexcused absence counts as 5, 6 or 7 absences depending on how many classes a student carries toward the total of 14. On the 15th unexcused absence, students may be referred to an alternative educational program/site pursuant to the District’s involuntary transfer policy (AR/OP 5113). TARDIES: Students may not exceed 19 unexcused tardies across their entire schedule. An unexcused tardy is an absence from class from when the bell rings until up to 30 minutes of a class period. At the 15th unexcused tardy, there will be a mandatory parent conference with the student’s Assistant Principal. This conference will be scheduled to occur the morning after the family is contacted by the school. At the student/parent conference, consequences for continued tardiness are discussed and the student is assigned to Saturday School. An attendance contract will also be signed at this meeting. Failure to attend Saturday School may result in a transfer to an alternative educational program/site. Classroom Rules: 8. GRADE BOOK UPDATE POLICY: Grades will be posted on the Aeries Student Information System at least every 2 weeks. Every effort will be made to do the grades sooner if possible. If at any time you have a question regarding your grade, please ask me and we can clarify the situation. If you do not turn in an assignment or have an excused absence you may have a blank for a particular test and/or assignment. Blanks are filled in as work is assessed. It is your responsibility to keep track of your grade, an organized notebook/binder with all assignments/quizzes/etc. can be a great way to clarify a mistake in the grade book. 1.
