Course Description: This course is an intermediate level study of the skills necessary for conducting
tutoring sessions at the Tutoring Center of the Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio
Technical College. Topics include: a Review of Level I discussion, Use of Probing Questions, Learning
Styles, Cultural Awareness, Online Tutoring, Study Strategies, and Test Proctoring.
Course Prerequisites: Level I Basic Tutor Certification

General Policies:
1. Class Attendance
Level II Tutor Training is not required to maintain employment at the OSUN/COTC Tutoring
Center. However, tutors wishing to obtain their Level II Advanced Tutor Certification through the
College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) must attend all 10 hours of live training.
2. Project
Tutors seeking Level II Advanced Tutor Certification must complete a project as described in the
Level II Tutor Training Manual. The requirements for this project must be submitted to the
Tutoring Center Coordinator no later than the last day of Level II training in which the tutor is
enrolled.
3. Quizzes, Midterm Exams, and Final Exam
Four essay quizzes will be given during live training. All tests and quizzes are open note.
4. Course Evaluation
Tutors must score at least a 90% on these quizzes and exams to pass. Anyone not scoring at
least a 90% must conference with the Tutoring Center Coordinator, who will then schedule the
administration of a follow up quiz or test covering the same material. If the tutor obtains the
required score on the second try, the new score will replace the old. If not, the Tutoring Center
Coordinator will discuss further actions with the tutor.
5. Academic Misconduct
All work must be done by the individual claiming it. No credit will be given for plagiarized work.

7. Campus Assessment Statement
As part of COTC’s campus-wide assessment initiatives (quality assurance program), samples of
student performance such as test results, projects, papers, etc. may be used. The data gathered
will not identify individual students and is not related to the student’s grade for the course, but
will be used to improve student learning at COTC.
8. Americans with Disabilities Act
Any student with a documented disability which may require special accommodations should
self-identify to the instructor as early as possible in order to receive effective and timely
accommodations.

PERFOMANCE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, a tutor will be able to:
1.0 Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts presented in Level I training (corresponds to the
College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) standards Review of Level 1 topics.)
1.01 Reinforce Level I training.
1.02 Create connections between old material and new.
1.03 Provide clarification of topics from previous training modules.
1.04 Share personal experiences with fellow tutors.
2.0 Use probing questions (corresponds to CRLA standard Use of probing questions.)
2.01 Understand the importance of using probing questions within a tutoring session.
2.02 Know Socratic Method and how it is used to aid in learning.
2.03 Help students learn by using the Socratic Method.
3.0 Understand learning styles (corresponds to CRLA standard Adult learners and/or Learning theory
and/or Learning styles.)
3.01 Understand that the term “learning styles” can be defined in several ways.
3.02 Use a simple inventory to determine learning style.
3.03 Appreciate learning differences.
3.04 Acquire more strategies and resources for working with various learning styles.
4.0 Be aware of cultural diversity (corresponds to CRLA standard Cultural Awareness and inter-cultural
communications and/or Diversity.)
4.01 Evaluate one’s attitudes toward diversity.
4.02 Review some general strategies and suggestions about working with diverse students.
4.03 Learn some reasons why international students seek tutoring.
4.04 Gain an understanding of why issues of diversity are important.
5.0 Use the internet as a tool in tutoring (corresponds to CRLA standard Other: Online Tutoring.)
5.01 Understand strategies for tutoring online students.
5.02 Use strategies presented for online tutoring.
5.03 Refer students to other online resources, such as eTutoring.
6.0 Implement a variety of strategies for tutoring in specific subject areas (corresponds to CRLA
standard Tutoring in specific skill and/or subject areas.)
6.01 To access the Internet in order to find resources for specific subject areas (e.g. Nursing,
History, Psychology, etc.).
6.02 To analyze resources from website for use in tutoring sessions.
