Global Studies Unit Lesson Plan Ashley Purgason My Communities and How they are Governed Common Core/ Essential Standards (K) K.C&G.1 Understand the roles of a citizen. K.C&G.1.1 Exemplify positive relationships through fair play and friendship. K.C&G.1.2 Explain why citizens obey rules in the classroom, school, home and neighborhood. (2nd) 2.C&G.2 Understand the roles and responsibilities of citizens. 2.C&G.2.1 Exemplify characteristics of good citizenship through historical figures and everyday citizens. 2.C&G.2.2 Explain why it is important for citizens to participate in their community. NCSCOS SCOS: (4th) Competency Goal 4 The learner will analyze social and political institutions in North Carolina such as government, education, religion, and family and how they structure society, influence behavior, and respond to human needs. 4.03 Explain the importance of responsible citizenship and identify ways North Carolinians can participate in civic affairs. SCOS: (5th) Competency Goal 2 The learner will analyze political and social institutions in North America and examine how these institutions respond to human needs, structure society, and influence behavior. 2.08 Describe the different types of families and compare and contrast the role the family plays in the societal structures of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and selected countries of Central America. Extended Standard: There are currently no extended content standards for Global Studies. Objective: (As student response modes vary greatly, you must refer to individual IEPs/student information for how they will respond. Typical responses include, but are not limited to: eye-gaze, touching objects/picture-symbols, body movement, vocalizations, pointing, use of switches or other AT devices, etc.) Vocabulary: community, citizens, rule, family, school Symbolic: The student will identify words, identify picture-symbols, and answer questions with verbal cues and written words/picture symbols. Choices given will number 4-8 with distractors. Students will complete the assignments with minimal assistance only as needed, mainly with reminders of sequence/directions. Early Symbolic: The student will identify picture symbols and answer questions with minimal to maximum assistance and picture symbols. Choices given will number 2-4 with or without distracters. Students will complete the assignments with minimal to maximum assistance. Assistance with completing the assignments will be given based on student need. Pre-Symbolic: The student will identify picture symbols and answer questions using total communication and maximum to full assistance. Maximum to full assistance with completing the assignments will be given based on student need. Links to Prior Knowledge/Relevance: Prior lessons related to family, back to school, community. Students will bring to school and place in Goodwill box for donation. This is a good citizen! (send notes home during the weeks before) Independent Practice: The student will complete assignments to his/her level of independence following teacher demonstrations.
