Wrap-up: Winter 2013 Classes/Events Working the Bay: Images and Objects from the Penobscot Marine Museum At a cooperative event planned by CSC and the Penobscot Marine Museum, Searsport, an enthusiastic group enjoyed presentations by Museum staff, Kevin Johnson. Photo archivist, and Cipperly Good, Collections manager. This free two-part program provided an excellent learning opportunity for Maine history buffs and others interested in old towns and occupations in Maine, specifically Knox County, from pre-history to the 20th century. The event was open to CSC members and well as guests. In the first lecture of the 2-week series, Kevin Johnson described of the museum’s largest collection: the inventory from the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co., a real photo postcard manufacturer based in Belfast from 1909-1950’s. He has digitized photos from approximately 35,000 glass negative plates that the Museum obtained from the company. The pictures depict Mid-Cost Maine life from the 1890-1950 and feature towns in Maine and other parts of New England and New York, including main streets, post offices, factories, schools, etc. The audience, comprised of history buffs as well as the curious, had an enthusiastic discussion as many in attendance enjoyed seeing scenes from their youth. The next week Cipperly Good presented the human, geological and geographic history of Penobscot Bay with photos and maps from the Museum’s collection. Cipperly’s interesting presentation described how each aspect of this history influenced the maritime economic development of Penobscot Bay focusing on Knox County. The class was held in Watts Hall in Thomaston and CSC hopes to have future events and classes in that venue. Spring 2013 Courses Have you enrolled yet?? Classes begin March 6th.
