154 students are enjoying or will enjoy 12 (8 in January, 4 to start this month) courses and 4 on-going groups, according to BJ Frederick,
Chair of the Curriculum Committee. There's still time to sign-up for the February classes, two of which are described below. Our total membership is 256.
Two of the CSC courses starting in February provide a chance for you to enhance your ability to do genealogy research and/or to introduce you to a unique local museum.
Helen Shaw, a genealogist with experience as a writer, teacher and researcher, will describe the data you can use (military records, cemetery records, church records for instance), both in original source and on the Internet to add to your knowledge of your ancestors - a wonderful legacy to pass on to your descendants. Cyber research has greatly simplified information retrieval. You don’t have to go to the permanent archives located in far-away places. The class, taught at the library in Camden, starts Tuesday February 12 (4 weeks) from 1-3
pm. See details at our website and call 1-800-286-1594 to register.
Interactive Study of Transportation
“Great place to visit with or without kids!”
“If you like lovingly restored antique cars and planes…”
“Amazing! Cool! So much fun!”
“A splendid museum…this is a gem”
And…it’s in Midcoast Maine AND CSC is providing an opportunity for you to learn about this unusual collection in a class starting on
February 5. It’s a hands-on course, taught by William Dashiell and
Bruce Stedman, that will give you more than the basic tour of the museum. See our January newsletter for details about what to expect. Don’t miss this class - and think of the appreciation you’ll get from visitors (comments above from TripAdvisor) who learn about this place from YOU!! Call 1-800-286-1594 to register.
At Owls Head Transportation Museum you’ll see cars, planes, motorcycles and engines that actually work! There are vintage Rolls
Royces, classic MGs, and stunning Packards; there are 28 different historical planes. During the summer, special events feature the collection and there are world-famous auctions that attract buyers and sellers from far and wide.
The CSC Spring Catalogue will be mailed February 11. Once again, BJ
Frederick and the Curriculum Committee (including our inestimable instructors) have outdone themselves to provide a wide spectrum of classes - history, art, literature and current events - and more energy workshops for those of you who did not take my advice about insulating your electrical outlets. (See December, 2012 e-Newsletter.)

Save the Date: MAY 3, 2013: the CSC annual luncheon at the
Samoset Resort on the Ocean. Our guest speaker is Colin Woodard , award-winning journalist and author. Stay tuned for more details.
Our website has a list of other venues in our area: Skidompha,
Thomaston and Camden libraries that offer a plethora of activities, author talks, films. The Lincoln Theater (Damariscotta), the Strand
Theater (Rockland) and the Harbor Theater (Boothbay) also feature many interesting films, old and current as well as performances of opera, ballet and theatre. Don’t forget our many museums and the
Coastal Botanical Gardens. Spring and summer bring a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to enjoy.
From Peter Lehman: our latest technological improvement: a combination projector, DVD player and speakers that will allow instructors to project movies, slide shows and even presentations with no need for a computer or complicated wires and adjustments. We are excited to be able to improve the audio/visual experience for our students and our instructors.
According to Kay Liss, Marketing and PR VP, CSC will have a new brochure available next month. It will be the source of information and publicity for members and potential members, describing our mission and activities.
For a few hours of volunteering each semester you get infinite gratitude from students and instructors, committee chairs and members, the board and everyone involved in making CSC what it is.
We especially need help in Knox County. Check our website for more information or contact Peter Lehman or Vic Hart .
Can you deliver catalogues in the Rockland-Camden area? We’d like to make sure everyone knows about our programs. Good places for the catalogues are libraries, museums, gyms, churches, stores, Senior
Spectrum, Chamber of Commerce and other public locations where seniors can obtain them. Contact Peter Triolo if you can help.
In addition to our educational outreach through classes and special events, CSC likes to keep its members (and the community) engaged in learning and enjoying other enriching experiences. If you have any ideas of events for CSC members and non-members, we welcome your input and help. Contact Jack Farlow with your suggestions and interest.
The above does NOT mean that we don’t want to hear from you as well. Please share stories or anecdotes from your classes so others can know what makes our CSC classes amazing, interesting and worthwhile. (Note the photo of a machine, above. It may not be anyone you know but if you don’t send pictures, there are none to publish! I take what I can get.)
Thanks.
