GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORKER
General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible unskilled work in the maintenance and care of buildings, grounds,
and streets; collection of garbage, yard waste and trash; and related tasks.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Employees in this class perform a variety of unskilled tasks involving manual labor
requiring the use of hand tools and light equipment operation. Work involves street
maintenance, general housekeeping, building cleaning, and grounds maintenance work.
Work also includes driving a pickup or dump trucks to collect garbage, leaves, limbs,
appliances, furniture and other yard waste and trash. Employees may also be involved in
routine horticultural tasks, street sign maintenance, and minor facility and equipment
repair. Work assignments are repetitive in nature and can usually be performed with little
supervision. Employees must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others
and self. Employees are subject to hazards in maintenance work including working in
both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as noise,
moving mechanical parts, vibrations, dusts, chemicals, atmospheric conditions and oils.
Work in solid waste may subject employees to the final OSHA standards on blood borne
pathogens. Work is performed under the direct observation of a supervisor and reviewed
while in progress and upon completion to determine that proper work methods are being
followed and that assignments are carried out correctly.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
• Collects garbage and trash from marina and beaches; transports to disposal site.
• Operates a street sweeper to clean streets on a special shift.
• Operates dump trucks on designated routes to collect limbs and leaves; operates
chippers.
• Operates dump trucks on designated routes to collect furniture, appliances and
related trash; takes to appropriate landfill or station and disposes.
• Cleans public buildings; vacuums, sweeps, dusts, empties trash, cleans restrooms
and supplies with paper and related products; cleans windows, mirrors, etc.
• Operates mowers, chain saws, weed eaters and other light equipment to cut, prune
and trim shrubbery and trees; rakes leaves, and removes fallen limbs and trash;
applies pesticides and herbicides.
• Checks equipment to ensure proper operation and may perform minor
troubleshooting and maintenance.
• Erects, repairs and maintains street and informational signs for the Town; installs
parking lot lines and stripes and parking place bumpers; installs parking meters and
pay boxes.
• Performs cold patch on asphalt and may assist with patching and repairing
concrete structures such as sidewalks.
• Mows Town property using push mowers, plants, fertilizes, irrigates, and maintains
plants and shrubbery.
• Picks up trash in yards, parking lots, parks, and other areas; empties trash cans.
• Flags traffic and/or assists in other tasks in the maintenance and repair of water
and sewer lines and appurtenances.
• Keeps simple work activity records.

Knowledqe, Skills and Abilities
• General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
• General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in streets, grounds
and building maintenance and in garbage, trash and yard waste collection.
• Working knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.
• Ability to identify cleaning needs and resolve with appropriate methods and
supplies.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to use hand tools.
• Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees,
supervisors, and the general public.
• Ability to keep simple records of work activities.
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing,
balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking,
pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing
repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force
occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of
force constantly to move objects.
• Must possess the visual acuity to operate mechanical equipment and to participate
in trades related work, and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness
of the work assigned.
Desirable Education and Experience
• Graduation from high school and some experience in related maintenance tasks; or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirement
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
