AN OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO APPLY ACADEMIC CONCEPTS TO REAL WORLD ISSUES Energize BUILDING 21ST CENTURY SKILLS TO FOSTER SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS AND BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE Education Garnet Valley Middle School’s Energy Fair: April 24th, 2014 After reception of the NEED grant from PECO, Ms. Kunze’s science classes and Ms. Fledderman’s ATP students have been exploring the world of energy and its conservation. Now it is time for these students to share what they’ve discovered with you! Please join our 8th grade science classes and our academically talented students at our upcoming energy fair on April 24h, 2014! About the Fair The fair will be open to students and community members for most of the day, but we will have a community hour for adults and parents from 10:00 to 11:00. Refreshments and snacks will be provided during this hour for community members. Students from various classes will be able to explore about FORTY separate stations after an introductory presentation. During the fair, visiting students and community members will have the opportunity to explore what students in Ms. Kunze and Ms. Fledderman’s classes have been working on for the past few months. There will be presentations on different forms of energy and transportation, information on efforts to conserve energy, and structures designed to improve the district and personal efforts in energy conservation! During the energy fair, there will also be opportunities for hand-on activities and raffle prizes. Participants in the fair will be able to do the following: Make a fruit or potato battery. Make electricity with wind and water. Test the safety of your ear buds Watch clothes dry on solar clothes dryer. Try to identify the food turned to coal. Win bracelet that measures UV rays. See kinetic/potential energy in a rollercoaster. Make your own hand warmer. Use a solar-powered fan. Be part of a giant circuit. Bend a real live wire. See a perpetual motion machine. Watch light spin a fan. Boil liquids in your hands. Please come join us to view all of the hard work and innovation our students at the energy fair!! If you are interested in participating in the energy fair (parents or community members), and you have an idea for a student station or presentation, please do not hesitate to contact us (contact information on the back)! In Ms. Kunze’s Science Classes In science class students researched forms of energy, such as chemical, radiant and nuclear, and sources of energy, such as petroleum, solar and uranium. They studied the history and uses of electricity, made batteries with fruit and potatoes, built circuits and generated electricity with sun, wind and water. They are ready to bring their learning to you with hands-on fun, fascinating facts, transformational tidbits and electrifying enigmas at the GVMS Energy Fair. How safe are your ear buds? How much energy you can save with LED light bulbs? Will your car be powered by hydrogen one day? Wander among our displays, be part of a circuit and try your hand at making batteries. In Ms. Fledderman’s ATP classes In the academically talented program, eighth grade students are being challenged to build structures using conservation-minded thinking. These structures will build on concepts learned in science class and expand upon students’ understanding of energy, its uses, and the conservation of it. Students will build sustainable homes or schools using the forms of energy learned in science class and will build upon that understanding in ATP! Contact us with questions, comments, or donations! Ms. Carolyn Kunze: kunzec@garnetvalleyschools.com Ms. Renee Fledderman: fledder@garnetvalleyschools.com They will be playing energy games, participating in class lab experiments and solving conservation problems of heating, electricity, cooling, waste removal, or transportation. Looking at non-renewable and renewable energy sources, students will be able to create and innovate solutions for some our community’s most pressing concerns. All Around the District The entire Garnet Valley School District is undergoing an energy efficiency transformation! Every one of our schools has undergone an energy makeover. The schools have been equipped with energy-saving lighting, vending machines that use less energy, new heating and air-conditioning equipment, and high-tech controls to operate the equipment more efficiently. During the Energy Fair, visiting students and community members can take a virtual tour through these amazing projects and learn about the newest technologies in use right here in our schools. The District has also started an energy conservation campaign to help teachers, administrators and students use less energy through better behaviors. For example, did you know that shutting down computers at night can save money? The infrared photo (left) shows how leaving computers on at night waste energy in the form of heat (white/yellow). Come to the Energy Fair to learn more tips for conserving energy at school and at home. Come see how Conservation Works!
