(Salary range $30,000 to $36,000 annually, commensurate with experience; benefits package)
Deputy Marshals shall work under the authority of the Chief Marshal.
In the performance of their duties, Deputy Marshals shall be subject to rotating shift work, including requirements to regularly be on-call when not physically on duty.
In addition to patrol duties, Deputy Marshals shall be subject to various details and duties, as assigned by the Chief Marshal.
Conduct investigations of all crimes/incidents reported to the Hugo Marshal’s Office or initiated by the
Marshal’s Office.
Perform additional follow-up investigation, as appropriate.
Complete and submit a daily log of all duties and activities related to each shift worked.
Investigate motor vehicle accidents within the jurisdiction; issue appropriate tickets/summonses to drivers involved; complete and submit related reports.
Make physical arrests of suspects or wanted persons; complete and submit reports and court affidavits related to arrests.
Take enforcement actions regarding instances in which traffic laws or ordinances are violated.
Perform miscellaneous services for the public, as needed and permitted by law.
Generally provide law enforcement and oversee the public within the jurisdiction, taking lawful measures to ensure the peace and safety of the community and its residents.
Protect life and property of those within the jurisdiction.
Direct and control traffic, as needed, at motor vehicle accident scenes, fire scenes, scenes of natural disasters and/or other public events.
Protect crime scenes under investigation.
Collect evidence, as appropriate. Maintain chain of custody of all evidence collected until it is properly and securely logged in.
Work closely with law enforcement from neighboring jurisdictions.
Work closely with representatives from the District Attorney’s Office.
Work closely with victim advocates.
Work closely with probation officers.
Appear and testify in court when required to do so.
Participate in and/or be present at community functions, as directed by the Chief Marshal.

Must read, write, comprehend and clearly speak the English language.
Must clearly and accurately write and complete required reports, tickets, summonses and court-related documents.
Must comprehend and apply Town Ordinances, Colorado Revised Statutes, technical journals, case law and other legal documents, as necessary to perform duties.
Must be proficient with and qualify quarterly with approved sidearm and approved shotgun or rifle.
Must attend frequent arrest control training and participate in various activities while training which may result in exertion and/or temporary discomfort.
Must have the ability to feel and reach with hands; to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; to hear and talk; to have close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
May be exposed to extreme weather conditions while performing duties.
Deputy Marshal applicant must be a United States citizen or provide proof of valid resident alien status.
Deputy Marshal applicant must be P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certified and will be required to provide documentation of certification.
Deputy Marshal applicants who have prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer/deputy must have no history of serious disciplinary issues.
Deputy Marshal applicant must already possess or be eligible to obtain a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire, with no serious violations (e.g., suspensions/revocations, history of multiple speed-related violations, driving while intoxicated or driving while impaired, chargeable motor vehicle accidents) on their driving record and no pending tickets/summonses.
Deputy Marshal applicant must have a clear criminal record with no felony convictions. Deputy
Marshal applicant must not have any previously adjudicated or pending domestic violence or assault cases.
Deputy Marshal applicant must not be on probation or parole.
Probationary Deputy Marshals must successfully complete a Field Training Program, the length of which will be determined based on previous experience, at the discretion of the Chief Marshal.
Deputy Marshals shall establish residency within a 10-minute response time of the Town of Hugo at the time of hire.
