Match Reports Saturday, 11th of May, 2013. 1. Condors 2. Amazons 3. Raiders 4. Knights 1. Condors v Berwick For the first time this year, we arrived at the game with a full team! We were able to welcome back josh from holiday and also Julian into the team for his first game for the club. We started off quiet well and were determined to try and score early and we did create a lot of chances. Dylan was causing berwick all sorts of problems with his skill and strength and help push us forward. But slightly against the run of play berwick scored one that only just crossed the line. And then not along after they managed to get an unlucky penalty. We continued to work hard and Matt (returning from injury) continued to cause the berwick defence to panic but fell just short of the finishing touch. It was 2-0 at half time, though we were confident we could pull them back and get a result. We played much better in the second half, with jayden running all over the ground and almost scoring a great goal. The defence was fantastic at clearing the ball, and a special mention to Sam who was outstanding in goal and made some fantastic saves. We continued to create chances and with almost the last kick of the game, Tom scored with a great finish. But that's how the game finished. But it was a much improved effort and we learned that we need to take our chances and not let the other team off the hook. But let's get ready for next week and hopefully another win. Great work condors! 2. Amazons v Berwick The Amazons gave a great account of themselves against top team Berwick on Saturday. With the score at 2-2 with 5 minutes to go we really gave them some worries. Coach Erin Vandenberg had a full squad to work with and did a great job making the changes. Jo Grundy was superb in goals and continues to impress every week. Kristie, Kat, Amy Barker, Jess Nettelbeck and Ella did a great job at the back and with Mel Salomons guiding and instructing they learnt plenty on the day. Monique, Amy Nettelbeck, Lauren, Kendra and Nerida supplied the midfield grunt and work required to supply chances to the forwards. Esther, Mawi Te, Amanda and Sarah gave great service at the front and were impressive in all they did. It was a terrific effort but unfortunately 2 late goals to Berwick gave them the result for the day. Monique’s 2 goals were well taken chances and another impressive performance from her has shown how quickly she has taken to this game. Fantastic effort girls and a real example of how far you have come already. 3. Raiders v Lilydale The Raiders got their first win for 2013 with a strong effort against Lilydale. A 4-0 win with Mel Salomons scoring 3 and Ella scoring her first goal for the club. With Alison making her long awaited debut for the club she showed plenty of skills and will fit in nicely with the Raiders. Amy was terrific in goals. The defence of Ruth, Elissa, Alison and Nanette was solid all day and did their jobs well. Alex and Candice patrolled the wings and supplied plenty of wide balls for the attackers to chase. Davina and Cassie were in complete control in midfield and provided plenty of chances for the strikers. The Mels Betts and Salomons were a thorn in the side of the Lilydale defence all day and didn’t give them a moments rest. Monique and Ella gave us help off the bench and both of them were more than a match for their first division opponents. All up, a good day for us and hopefully quite a few more ahead. Well done ladies. 4. Knights v Berwick This week the Knights were looking for a third straight win and but faced tough opposition in 2nd placed Berwick United. The Knights were off to a flying start with early forward pressure and promising build up play. Tim M proved troublesome for the Berwick defence, who overplayed the ball in their back line to provide us with some early chances. The forward pressure was soon rewarded when Trent was brought down in the box after beating his man with a quick touch and pace. Chris converted the resulting penalty for an early 1-0 lead. As the first half wore on injuries started to take a toll, as first Steve then Harley, both of whom had been outstanding to then, were substituted after game ending injuries. Berwick started to try physically imposing themselves on the game and dished up some pretty ordinary challenges. However, our midfield continued to hold strong and denied Berwick any real space to run at our defence, so we closed out the half with a well earned lead. Berwick lifted in the second half and started to get numbers forward as they were allowed more time and space on the ball. After sustained pressure they finally netted a headed equaliser when defence was caught flat footed from a corner kick. For the remainder of the game the balance of play was fairly even, with both teams searching for the winner. Some good creativity from Tim M, Tim R, Dennis and Chris almost resulted in the winner. Unfortunately, with only a few minutes left, a nothing Berwick cross was slotted past Colbeck by a reflex defensive touch from Trent. Disappointing result, but not due to lack of effort. Score: 2 -1 loss Goals: Chris Noy (penalty - 15 mins) Best players: Mwilye, Tim M, Chris, Dennis, Trent.
