The attached job plan in its present form describes a 9:1 split between direct clinical care and
supporting professional activities. NHS Lothian allocates all consultants one SPA for CPD,
audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning and routine internal
communication. As a major teaching and research contributor, it would normally expect to
allocate additional SPA time for activities to do with undergraduate education, educational
supervision of trainee medical staff, research and other activities. These are all areas where
NHS Lothian has a strong commitment and we recognise the contribution that consultants are
both willing and eager to make. The precise allocation of SPA time and associated objectives
will be agreed with the successful applicant.
