Mission to Mars
09/03/13-10/28/13
Version 1
Mission to Mars
We are in search for a new colony; it is our goal to colonize Mars. First, though we need to search the
areas of Mars to record if there are favorable conditions for life. We will need a strong team to help
collect data.
We will then get together to compile our findings and show a presentation on October 25th, 2013.
Completion of the mission will grant you your passport to Space Center Houston on October 28 th,
2013.
We need to following teams~
Biologists- Alien Encounters
Students will research the make-up of Mars. They will be encouraged to think about the
characteristics of living organisms and about the possibility of looking for life on Mars. They will work
in small groups of 3-4 to design plants or animal life they believe could survive on Mars out of clay.
Mission Control- Animation
Students will learn about the components of the scientific team’s layout of a mission plan. They will
then break it down and create story boards to create stop motion videos. They will work in groups of
3-4 to create short videos which would take place in Mars.
Astronomers- Cosmic Observations
Students will learn about the process involved in learning about planetary exploration. They will learn
how planetary features are discovered by the use of remote sensing techniques. They will be
engaged in making multi-sensory observations and gathering data. They will work in small groups of
3-4 and design the different features of Mars such as craters, mountains, and poles.
Engineers- Mars Rover
Students will research the FIDO, Athena Long Range and Curiosity rovers. They will learn to identify
the instrumentation used to record data on the Mars surface. They will then work in small groups of 34 and create their own rover. The students should be able to explain the instrumentation on their
rover and complete challenges that simulate Mars exploration.
Scientists- Myth Busters
Students will have hands on time to conduct science experiments. Students will practice collecting
and the scientific method. By the end of this activity students will have firsthand experience on a
variety of topics that are or will be discussed in the classroom.

Enrichment Activity Descriptions
Screen Printing
Students will be introduced to a versatile printing
process utilized by visual artists worldwide. The
printing technique allows students to quickly and
easily make multiple images of original art.
Students will design T-shirts using the concepts
learned through the unit.
Library
During the activity we will support our district
initiative “Gotta Keep Reading” through our Library
Services Department. Our Students will be able to
look for new reading material. This will help them
meet their requirements for their Reading Core
Class.
Chess
Study Lounge
Students will learn how to play chess, while
learning problem solving techniques. This activity
teaches students to have great discipline in
concentration and cognitive skills. By the end of this
activity students will be able to exhibit their skill
through events held at the district level.
Students will be able to complete their homework
and/or work on class assignments. During this time
students will have access to lab tops with internet,
calculators, maps, dictionaries/thesauruses, along
with basic school supplies like paper and pens. By
the end of this activity students should be more
productive and accountable for their work habits.
Game Time
Students will be able to play together and practice
individual and team sports that encourage positive
peer interaction. The goal is for students who would
not regularly interact during the school day to work
together in a safe environment, while practicing
good sportsmanship.
Bear Talks
This is a whole group activity; students will talk
about current events or social issues that they
might be concerned with. The group talks will be
mediated by the site coordinator.
Weight Room
Insanity
Students will explore complex choreography and
movement through Hip-Hop music. Students will
learn how to think logically and find their own style
of self-expression. By the end of this activity
students will have developed great work habits and
boost of self-esteem. This activity is led by the
contracted vendor, Fly Wellness and Movement.
This activity will allow students to develop an
understanding on physical fitness. Students will use
weights and other gym equipment to build on
muscle strength and endurance. By the end of this
activity students will be able to demonstrate proper
usage of equipment and self-directed work out
regiments. They will be trained by a certified coach.
