SCHOOL HEALTH ASSISTANT DEFINITION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, administer basic first aid, and routine and emergency health assessment, treatment and referral services, dispense medications and screen ill or injured students in accordance with State laws and established District regulations and procedures; assist in the prevention, early detection and correction of health related problems; prepare and maintain a variety of records, files and reports. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Administer basic first aid, CPR and routine and emergency health assessment, treatment and referral services, dispense medications and screen ill or injured students in accordance with State laws and established District regulations and procedures; maintain records of students requiring medical attention and submit to appropriate personnel as directed. Administer first aid in emergency situations and notify nurse, administrator, parents, and/or paramedics as necessary; utilize a variety of health products and supplies in caring for injuries and health needs. Administer prescribed medication or other approved treatments and procedures to students with physician's instructions according to clearly defined procedures, including toileting, catheterization, suctioning, colostomy care, oxygen administration and other services; maintain required records; screen students with head lice. Evaluate, maintain and update a variety of health-related records and files including physical exams, disease reports, student health and immunization records, emergency medical records, accident reports, and health and disability reports; compile reports related to health statistics and related data and submit to student study teams or review committees as required. Provide a variety of information and assistance to parents and students related to local health and social services organization referrals; provide health related information to benefits and health care providers. Communicate with students, parents and health care providers regarding immunizations, vision, hearing and dental screenings, allergies and other health-related issues; provide follow-up services for mandated screening referral information; perform routine eligibility screening for social services agencies as required. Maintain the health office in a clean, orderly and safe condition; requisition and maintain health office supplies and related materials; maintain disaster and first aid kits for campus and field trips. Assist with the preparations and arrangements for health testing and screening programs and communicable disease control; record student test results; maintain confidentiality as required; pull students from classes; issue exposure notices as necessary. Perform a variety of clerical duties; type reports, correspondence, forms, notices and referrals; maintain files and duplicate materials as needed. Monitor students suspected of child abuse; report related information according to District and State procedures and policies. Attend health meetings and assist other school personnel as needed. Perform related duties as assigned. Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of clerical or office experience. Licenses and Other Requirements: Valid First Aid and CPR Certification issued by an authorized agency. Use of personal car requried for this position. Physical Abilities: Sitting or standing for extended periods of time; reaching overhead and horizontally to retrieve and store supplies; kneeling or crouching; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to observe student symptoms and injuries; and lifting heavy objects.
