Hand Washing We are once again asking all families to have their children wash their hands when they arrive as well as before they leave the Academy. We are looking for ways to cut down on the number of germs entering our center as well as trying to find ways to reduce the amount of germs being exposed to our families. Thank you for your assistance in this effort. SUNSCREEN We are asking each parent to put sunscreen on their child before they arrive at the Academy every day, and then the Academy staff will reapply the lotion in the afternoon and/or before pool time. Please check to make sure your child has their labeled sunscreen in their classroom. It’s very important that we protect the children’s skin from harmful rays of the sun. LOST & FOUND If your child is missing an item of clothing, please let the office know so we can be sure the item is returned to you. Also, please check that the clothing in your child’s bin is weather and size appropriate. Classroom News Elementary News – Ms. Renee The first month of summer has been filled with many field trips which have been a lot of fun! Our themes have been “Miles of Music,” “Little Critters,” “Starry Night,” and “Magic School Bus.” For the music week, the children enjoyed music with Ms. Sue in the morning followed by a story and art. Some of our art projects for the week included egg shaker maracas, singing straws, homemade bead drums, and listening to music while painting. We even played a game called musical painting – the children started drawing while music played and had to switch to someone else’s paper whenever the music stopped. For our field trip, we took a tour of Y94 where they had a chance to record their own voices on the radio equipment which was a lot of fun! During little critter week, we made spider webs with paint and glitter, created lady bugs from egg cartons, finger painted with insects, and created origami butterflies. We received a visit from the bug man and the children enjoyed seeing the tarantula and cockroaches that he brought along! We also visited Lindenwood Park and searched for insects. The students found beetles, flies, ants, and even moths! Starry Night week was a fun week for art! We painted mugs for Father’s Day, created sun catchers from glue, tried painting with bubbles, and colored our own Starry Night art work. In celebration of art we visited the Plain’s Art Museum and were allowed to tour their gardens and learn about the hummingbird sculpture. The students were able to draw their own patterns for a hummingbird. The last week was the week of Magic School Bus. We read some Magic School Bus books, made clay fossils and galaxy playdough, and we even conducted some science experiments! We also took a trip to Skateland and went to the play “101 Dalmatians” put on by the FMCT. Some children from our class were in the cast so it was exciting to see them perform! The older children even volunteered to make costumes so they enjoyed seeing the costumes they helped with in action! Over all, it’s been a very busy month! Preprimary News – Ms. Maria We are off to a great start this summer! We are busy learning the rules of the classroom and making new friends. The day consists of songs, books, art, outside time, free play, swimming, and snacks. The first week’s theme was, “Miles of Music.” Every morning we learn some new songs, read a book, and do an art activity that relates to the theme. The art activities this week included painting musical notes, driving cars through chocolate pudding, using paint daubers, painting train wheels using vegetables, and using watercolor paints to color copies of sheet music. The second week of summer had the theme, “Little Critters.” The kids enjoyed learning all about tiny animals, what they eat, and where they live. We started off the week by gluing small shapes onto slithering snakes. We also mixed paints together to make a colorful turtle shell and dripped water onto coffee filters and markers to create snails. Finally we learned more about frogs by making lily pads and frogs with long back legs. The third week we focused on the painting “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. We started by examining the painting in detail, noticing the moon, the circular stars, the houses, and the big black shape in the front. We had many great ideas about what this black shape might be… We decided to make our own starry night pictures using paint, tissue paper, and a big black shape. We also did a transfer art project where we transferred paint from a piece of foil to a piece of white paper. We enjoyed making a star wand with wet chalk and salt “sparkles.” Finally we used a small grinder to grind up coffee beans and make them into a gift for Father’s Day. The final week’s theme was “Magic School Bus.” The kids love the Magic School Bus books! We had a lot of fun exploring different science themes each day. Monday we made “space rocks” by painting rocks with glow-inthe-dark paint. Tuesday we planted flower seeds in pots we had painted. Wednesday we made weather spirals to hang up. Thursday we examined eggs and learned the parts: shell, yolk, and albumen. We also tasted a piece of an egg! Friday we read a book about animals in the wild and painted a magic school bus picture. Toddler News - Ms. Brittany Our summer in the toddler room has started out busy. We are busy learning some more rules in our new room and helping make our new friends feel welcomed. Our first theme was “Miles of Music.” We decorated wooden maracas and sang lots of songs! The second week’s theme was “Little Critters.” We painted with gummy worms and even tasted some! We also made paper plate lady bugs and went on a nature walk. We found many different insects and creatures! The toddlers love going for walks in the strollers! For the third week our theme was “Starry Night.” We painted with corn syrup on a star for our art and read many books. Some of the books we read were “Papa Please Get the Moon for Me,” “Roaring Rockets,” “Zoo in the Sky,” and “Stars.” We sang a lot of songs as well. Some of the songs we sang were “5 Little Spacemen,” “5 Little Astronauts,” “4 Little Stars,” “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and “Climb aboard the Spaceship.” The last theme was “Magic School Bus.” We made water color sea horses and played outside in the water table! We started off the month with a week of “Miles of Music.” There were musical notes everywhere in all different colors. We got to sing with Ms. Sue and we played our new maracas – we had a lot of fun! For art we made musical notes, guitars, and a picture maraca, all with our hands or feet. We also read lots of books. Some of these books were “Chica Chica Boom Boom,” “Wheels on the Bus,” “Giraffes Can’t Dance,” and “Brown Bear,” which happens to be Ms. Connie’s favorite!
