“I Believe” Athletes take many drugs to help improve athletic performance in many sports. Many athletes have a lot of competition when it come to the big leagues, and to be more enhanced than other players they use drugs to get ahead. However, sometimes performance enhancing drugs have very serious effects on the player’s health in the long run. Drugs are not always the answer to getting ahead in sports, but rather hard work. I believe if I was given a chance to take, stimulants, beta-blockers, steroids peptide hormones I would not because of the major effects they cause on your health. One major drug athletes take to help their sports performance is stimulants. Stimulants is a drug that temporarily increases alertness and energy. Many athletes chose to take these drugs to give an energy pump to the body before a game to reduce tiredness. This causes the body to speed up and have more alertness which is key in playing a high active sport. However, there are multiple risk to taking stimulants. For example, it is very addictive and destructive and taking to make can make you very hostile. Beta-blockers is a medication that slows down your heart rate. This is another drug that athletes use to enhance their physical performance in sports. Many athletes who participate in a sport that requires a steady hand or good eye use stimulants to keep them calm. However, it’s important not to exercise while taking them because they could cause you to have a heart attack. When taking this drug, your risks for a heart attack go up because it causes your blood pressure to decrease a sufficient amount. Another performance enhancing drugs are steroids. Steroids promote the growth of skeletal muscle and the development of male sexual characteristics in both male and female. Not all steroids are used to improve athletic performance, some are used to treat actually disorders or health issues. However, many athletes use this drug to increase muscle size and reduce their body fat. Also, it can help the athlete recover between work outs quicker and increase aggressiveness. This drug has many risks though, including elevated cholesterol, the bones in the body stop growing, blood clotting disorders, and high blood pressure. Lastly, athletes use peptide hormones, which is a class of peptides that are secreted into the blood stream and have endocrine functions in animals, to improve their athletic performance. Athletes use these drugs for many reasons such as, their effect on muscle mass, how it helps injuries heal quickly, they help burn fat, and help improve athletic performance overall. But, the risks to taking this drug is life threatening. For example, some risks are aggression, high blood pressure, liver damage, stunted growth, rage, and depression. Athletes take many performance enhancing drugs to improve their athletic ability. But, many of them might not know the high risks these drugs have on their health. Drugs such as, stimulants, betablockers, steroids and peptide hormones all have risks that can leave damaging effects on the user’s health. For reasons stated above, I would never take any of these drugs to improve in sports. If I wanted to improve in sports, I would work hard and learn the game rather than risk my life using these drugs.
