JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Senior Research Associate (Midwifery) in Maternal & Newborn Health Responsible to: TBC Summary of role: The Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health (CMNH) at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine offer unique expertise in using the rigorous discipline of research to inform teaching and technical assistance programmes to improve the health of mothers and babies globally. As a leading, global centre of excellence for maternal and newborn health we aim to: Improve the availability and quality of healthcare for mothers and babies Contribute to a global reduction in maternal and new born mortality and morbidity and improvement in quality of life. The Senior Research Associate (Midwifery) will work with the current Head of the CMNH to lead the CMNH academic team based at LSTM to develop and deliver research, teaching and technical assistance in Maternal and Newborn Health internationally. The post will be based in Liverpool, however duties will require overseas travel. Main Duties: The post holder will work, as part of a team, to provide support to the delivery and evaluation of complex interventions to improve Maternal and Newborn Health globally, specifically around Skilled birth attendance/Midwifery Emergency Obstetric and Newborn care (Pre-service) Key Responsibilities: Together with the Head of CMNH, to supervise and develop academic staff in the CMNH, to ensure research outputs are delivered to a high standard and on time. In collaboration with global partners develop new research proposals in line with the CMNH Strategy. Assist with dissemination of output of CMNH via writing of project reports, publications for peer reviewed journals, technical briefs and success stories. Provide technical assistance on won bids when need for expertise identified. Contribute to teaching at LSTM including lecturing and supervision of student projects, the DTM&H, DRH and Masters in International Public Health (Sexual and Reproductive Health Pathway). Supervision of PhD students Act as line manager to other staff in CMNH or to staff working in the field in collaboration with the CMNH. PERSON SPECIFICATION: Senior Research Associate (Midwifery) in Maternal & Newborn Health Criteria Education & Training Experience Competency Essential / Desirable Midwifery/Nursing qualification with clinical experience. E Masters level degree in Public health or related field E PhD E Successful work experience in an Asian and/or African countries with evidence of high quality assessment standards which will be evidenced in references Clinical field experience in maternal and newborn health in a developing country setting, undertaking duties such as supervision of labour ward staff and organisation of maternity services Previous experience of grant proposal writing E Experience of managing staff and leading teams E E Relevant teaching experience at postgraduate level E Experience of supervision of postgraduate research D Experience of /consultancy providing Application Form, Assessment and Interview E students Knowledge E E Experience working with MoH Application Form/CV E Previous research experience which has led to authorship on peer reviewed publications Experience of working to targets and deadlines Assessment technical assistance D Working knowledge of evidence based interventions that improve global MNH outcomes E E Assessment and Interview Knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research methodology and analytical approach Skills & Abilities Understanding of the importance of functioning health systems for the successful implementation of MNH interventions E Proven ability of high quality use of language in writing which outlines academic achievements E Proven ability to write research or project proposals E Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with staff at all levels E Confident communicator with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing E Ability to work productively and co-operatively as a team member and to develop flexible working relationships with academic and non-academic colleagues and students Computer literate Numerate Excellent time management and organisational skills Special Aptitude E E E E Has effective interpersonal skills and the ability to be sensitive in difficult situations E Sensitivity to a variety of cultures E Flexible with regard to working arrangements E Enthusiastic approach to work E Diplomacy E Full time Must be able to travel and work overseas Assessment and Interview Assessment and Interview
