This commenced because of the engineering modules I studied at Edge Hill University and has deepened through the focus that the University of Leeds places on this industry. This interest ranges from the intricacies of site investigation, overall aspects of the building when complete to large scale rock and soil engineering. I strongly believe my interests and activities have helped develop my leadership qualities, confidence to communicate and the ability to operate with high levels of responsibility and proficiency. EDUCATION MSc BSc 4 A-levels 10 GCSEs Engineering Geology (University of Leeds) 2015-2016 Key Modules: Rock Engineering, Soil Engineering, Hydrogeology, Geological Models and Ground Investigation, Lab and Field Skills, Hazards, Resilience & Sustainable Engineering. Dissertation Project: Yet to be assigned. Physical Geography and Geology (Edge Hill University) 2012-2015 Key modules: Geological Techniques, Volcanology and Igneous Petrology, Sedimentology, Geomorphology, Geo-environmental Engineering, Managing the Geoenvironment, Environmental Hydrology, Geohazards, Postglacial Environments. Dissertation Project: Undergraduate dissertation project consisting of 4 weeks of geologically mapping a 12 square kilometer area of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula in Scotland. This area included the famous volcanic ring dyke, Meall Sanna, and a succession of varying gabbros which were occasionally overlaid with mesozoic sediments. Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Sixth Form, 2010-2012: Includes Geography, Mathematics (at grade B), Psychology, Economics. Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, 2008-2010: 2 A*’s (including Geography), 4 A’s (including Mathematics, English Literature) and 4 B’s (including English Language). EXPERIENCE Edge Hill University- 2012 to 2015 Course Representative – This role involved liaising between the university’s academic staff and my fellow students. Whilst doing this, my main task was voicing the concerns of the students and ensuring that these were dealt with to ensure the best possible academic experience for my peers. Dissertation Project – E H Booth & Co Ltd. – 2010 - 2014 General Store Assistant - I experienced a variety of different roles. I was asked to have a lot of interaction with customers to make sure their needs were met and any questions they would ask were answered appropriately, this has made me confident in oral communication. I learnt a huge amount about time management and organization. Throughout I was required to take note of stock and distribute this within the store. This was also married with stock control and quality checks as well as making sure the stock room was kept in order. Good Samaritan Primary School, Uganda - 2012 Teacher and Building Assistant – I spent four weeks at the Good Samaritan Primary School in Uganda near Kampala. I taught classes from each age group (3-11 years of age) a variety of subjects; This included teaching the class for several hours a day, helping with the preparation of assemblies and organization of the classrooms. On every other day I would help the local builders in expanding the school to include more classrooms, assembly hall and living accommodation for some of the students. SKILLS Teamwork: Through several projects and group activities, especially the 2012 trip to Uganda where I was a member of 18 person group, my ability to work in team has increased greatly. Written and Oral Communication: Throughout my years of education I have submitted countless reports and assignments. This has greatly enhanced my written presentation skills. Oral skills have been taught and improved through presentations and survey work. Oral communication has also been enhanced during group work when I have been tasked as being a group leader as well as my time as a course representative at Edge Hill University. Problem Solving: When conducting a project in Mallorca on coastal platforms, many issues were identified in the methodology upon arrival, due to the time constraints of the project these had to be solved quickly and rectified; this along with the challenges of teaching children in Uganda who do not speak your native language improved my problem solving abilities. Computer Literacy: During the course of my degrees, learning how to use software has been very important. I am now proficient and highly competent in Minitab, Microsoft Office, iWork, ArcGIS (specifically ArcMap and ArcScene), WAVE, RS2, Corel Draw and Canvas. Laboratory Usage: On certain projects I have had to use laboratory equipment to gather more precise data. Throughout many lab classes, examples of the equipment I am comfortable in using and interpreting the data that is produced includes: Point Load Test, Permeater, Robertson Shear Box, Undrained and Drained Triaxial machines, Schmdit Hammer and others. Fieldwork Skills: From the nature of my degrees, a great deal of fieldwork has been undertaken which has meant I am comfortable in providing geological descriptions of lithological units in the field amongst analysing features such as landslide systems and geomorphological landforms. The gathering, organisation and application of this data is now second nature. Mathematical Skills: From completing an A-level in Mathematics, it is a subject that I find very interesting so enjoy incorporating it during analysis and interpretation of results. Geotechnical Analysis: I have attended a talk given by Dr. Andrew Bond by the Yorkshire and Humber Geotechnical Group based on the origin of Eurocode 7 and its applications. I am able to provide full BS 5930 rock and soil descriptions in the field. Site Investigation and Geological Models: I understand the process of site investigation and its importance. I have constructed conceptual geological, geomorphological, geotechnical and hydrological/hydrogeological models throughout my MSc course, including a section of the Whitby coastline and for a section of the proposed High Speed Rail track. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School: School Prefect, Senior Drake House Captain, Senior and Junior Colours and House Crest. Represented the school in swimming, rugby, football and badminton from the age of 13. Keen footballer: participated in two leagues during my time at Edge Hill University, captained one of them to win a university 6-a-side tournament. Certifications: Full UK Driving License. Organisations: Fellow of the Geological Society. REFERENCES Mr. Gerry Lucas. Senior Lecturer, Edge Hill University Dr. James Rowson. Lecturer, Edge Hill University
