SOAS Translation Initiative in Japanese Studies
The SOAS Translation Initiative in Japanese Studies is a multidisciplinary, multitiered program for
translating and disseminating scholarship on Japan not previously available in English. We seek to translate
and publish in depth work from all disciplines as they relate to the study of Japan.
The core set of translations for this series derive from an annual workshop convened at SOAS with the aim
of expanding the base of translated scholarly works while simultaneously increasing the number of young
professionals skilled in translating Japanese language scholarship.
The Initiative is headed by Dr Christopher Gerteis with support from the Japan Research Centre and
generous grants from the Nippon Foundation.
Representative of the wide range of scholarly disciplines focused on the field of Japanese Studies, the
translations are issued individually, as listed below.
