On Thursday, November 11, 2010, students will not attend school. Instead, they should come to school with you to conduct their conference with you at your scheduled conference time. Research shows that when the student creates a portfolio of their performance, they understand the impact their classwork has on their success at school. It also holds them accountable for the good and not so good work they do at school. The good news is we have a lot of good news to share. Our students are working hard, and more students are completing assignments than ever! All parents attending will receive a panther parent point for attending! Also, Lockland Elementary will be hosting a book fair that will be open beginning Nov. 11 during conferences. Students will visit the book fair during their Library time Friday Nov. 12-Nov. 18. The October Halloween Festival was a great success! Thank you to the PTO members who organized the event and to all of the students, teachers, and family members who attended. In language arts we are beginning to blend letter sounds to create words, reading word wall words by sight, journal writing, and visualizing to help make predictions in stories. We are working hard in our Daily 5 stations so we can become better readers and writers. In math we have been measuring objects using non-standard units of measurement. After measurement we will begin studying coins and their values. In Social Studies we are learning about the first Thanksgiving, and studying maps. We are working hard in school, so please continue working hard at home by reading and completing homework each night with you child. First Grade News The first grade is learning about the First Thanksgiving. We are comparing and contrasting how children lived in Pilgrim times to how we live today. In reading we are learning the long vowel sounds and their many spellings. In math we have finished working with shapes and exploring how they are alike and different. Our next unit is on strategies for addition and subtraction. Second Grade News The second graders just went on a free field trip offered by the Taft Art Museum. They compared and contrasted things from the past with things in our times by studying the art. They are continuing to work on reading fluency, past and present tense verbs and suffixes – ed and –ing. They will be learning to use a beginner’s dictionary as well! In Science, students are learning about the Five Senses In Math they are busy practicing Measurement, both standard and non-standard units. Students are identifying when to correctly use centimeters, meters, inches, feet, or yards. Then they will compare differences between units such as inches, feet, yards, cups, pints, and quarts. In Social Studies, students are comparing Technology and Transportation from long ago and today. Please work with your child as you encounter these topics on a daily basis in your homes! Grade Level News School Newsletter Page 3 of 4 Third Grade News Third grade has been busy enjoying stories like “The Tree House”, “Ratty Rats”, and “The Sky is Falling”. We have been identifying characters, setting, and sequence of the plot. We have also been identifying the theme of our stories. We just started a unit working with making predictions and identifying character traits. The students enjoyed listening to Stephanie’s Ponytail and making predictions about what would happen next. If you have never read this book by Robert Munsch, we encourage you to borrow it from the library and read it. It is guaranteed to make you laugh! In writing, the students learned the five parts of a friendly letter. They wrote class letters to Mrs. Kipp, Mrs. Flo, and Ms. Gibson. Then they wrote personal letters to the people of their choice. A timely unit in Social Studies is about local government. We learned the jobs of the government, the public services that are provided for us and that our taxes pay for them, and the leaders of our local government. (The students were excited to discover on the village of Lockland’s website that our own Mr. Raby is the vice mayor; we also learned that the Fifth Grade News mayor’s granddaughter is our very own Alexis!) We ended our government unit with a lesson on power and authority and how bullying is an example of using power without having authority. In science we have been learning how prehistoric animals resemble animals of today. We have also been comparing and contrasting these animals using venn diagrams. We are learning how fossils are made and learning about molds, casts, and imprints. We also practiced being paleontologists for a day by taking apart fossilized cookies and identifying the fossils in them. In math we were learning about fractions and decimals, but have changed our attention to Multiplication. We are learning different methods in how to solve multiplication problems and have just started memorizing our multiplication facts. The students are very excited this year in memorizing facts, as we are using a new program called Rhymes and Lines to help us! So, try out a problem with us…6 x 6, 36 Lollipop Licks….and see if you can remember! Fourth Grade News We are back to working on fractions this week. The new word of the week was EQUIVALENT. Figuring out an equivalent fraction took some thinking. There is so much to do with fractions…fractions, decimals, money, numerators, and denominators, whole fractions, number lines etc… Friday we will have a quiz on fractions. This week their objectives were to use models to compare commonly used fractions and use points of reference to compare commonly used fractions. Fifth Grade News The fifth grade is very excited about this month’s field trip to the Cyclones hockey game. The Cyclones have put together a morning chocked full of education in the areas of math, science, geography, and PE, using hockey as a backdrop. Band News 5th Grade Band: The 5th grade band is off to a good start. This is the largest beginning band class in many, many years! They will be performing in two concerts in December, (more information to come), so please make sure your child is practicing on their own at home. If you have any questions, please contact Chad Welage at 563-5000 x159. A Note from the School Nurse This is cold and flu season. Please check your child in the morning. If they are throwing up or have a fever, please keep them at home. Frequent hand washing with soap and water or hand sanitizer and drinking lots of water will help ward off those germs. Have a healthy and happy fall. Music Notes Our 2nd and 3rd grade students have begun practicing for the annual Holiday Concert and Art Show which will be held on December 7. Even though we have just started, the students are picking up the songs quickly and are enjoying our songs about snow. We hope you will be able to join us on the 7th. Physical Education Notes Even though it is November, we have been lucky to have really warm weather. Make sure the children are playing outside. Limit TV time and get up and move. Put on some of your favorite music and teach your children the old moves! We are starting an incentive program for the kids to walk the “Panther Path” on the school playground and earn incentives for walking miles. Watch for the flyer in the mail for all Kindergarten, 3rd, and 5th grade students regarding the state law mandating schools to complete a BMI screening for K, 3, and 5 – Lockland Elementary date, Dec. 8 Art Notes: Mrs. Hoerst With the Thanksgiving season approaching we have been working on the theme Native Americans. The younger students made Chief Vests and used a picture dictionary to communicate. They also listened to Tommy Depaola's story of The Legend of The Bluebonnet and illustrated their favorite part. The older students used clay to make pottery after learning where clay comes from and how it was used over 4000 years ago to make containers. Third graders accepted a challenge to weave using mini looms and are in the process of making awesome clothes which you will be able to view at the fine arts display in Dec.
