Report about the project week in Walsall by the students
29-03-2014:
We had a very early start, took the bus to Bratislava, the plane to Birmingham, then
the train to Walsall, where the students met their host families and students from the
Black Country UTC and the teachers checked into their hotel. After this long day, the
students spent the evening with their host families and the teachers had a quiet night
– ready for adventures.
30-03-2014:
After meeting with some students and teacher from Black Country UTC at the railway
station in Walsall, where we discussed the program of the project week for the
following days. We were shown the bus station and the bus lines that we would need
to take to go to the Black Country UTC on Monday morning. After conclusion of our
meeting, we, our teachers and some students from BC UTC went on a day trip to
Lichfield, where we visited the famous cathedral and spent a lovely afternoon in the
town.
31-03-2014:
First day at Black Country UTC. First we were shown the workshops and the school.
After an introductory meeting with the English teachers and students, we went sailing
on the UTC’s own lake. Great fun!

01-04-2014:
A trip to Birmingham. Our English partners organised a guided tour for us including
the most important places, such as the city centre and the Birmingham Think-Tank
where we found out a lot of facts about the science behind mechanical technology.
02-04-2014:
The first day at the workshop. The students worked on their project – the construction
of a small engine powered by compressed air. It was a very successful day.
03-04-2014:
Before continuing with the project, the English
and the Austrian students had a sports class
together where they played football. For once, an Austrian team succeeded in an
international competition.

04-04-2014:
Today we spent another successful day at the workshop. The projects are almost
ready and need only the final touch. We celebrated this at MFA Bowling Centre in
Bloxwich.
05-04-2014:
We started with a project meeting with students from Black Country UTC which
closed with Lunch. It was the day of yet another great football game, this time Aston
Villa v. Fulham FC which we visited. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and a game
that was exciting until the very last minute.

06-04-2014:
After a short meeting on the aims of the 2nd week, the students had the choice
between visiting the RAF museum and going to Birmingham again. Most of them
joined three of their teachers in Birmingham, where we visited the new Library and
the City Museum, had a walk along the Canal and finally plenty of time for shopping.
07-04-2014:
The English and Austrian students went to a visit to Jaguar and Land Rover in
Solihull together. There were three attractions: a tour through the plant where we saw
how Land Rovers are built, a lecture on the history and current developments of the
company and finally some games where students had to work in groups and design
and build their own trolleys to see how mass production in assembly lines works.
08-04-2014:
We visited Iron Bridge together with our English partners. We visited some museums,
saw the famous bridge and then went to the Victorian town, a huge outdoor museum,
where Victorian houses, shops and even a pub and a factory can be visited. It was a
very interesting day for all of us.

09-04-2014:
It was our final day at Black Country UTC.
Today the students’ project was almost successfully completed – all four engines
work perfectly.
After a maths class, a science class and a final football match, there was the farewell
ceremony, where students and teachers were given their certificates for taking part
and finally, it was time to say good bye to our new friends from England.
10-04-2014:
Our last day in England: The students said good bye to their host families and some
of the students from Black Country UTC and we travelled back home.
