Science Project- Part I Science is the observation and study of anything that takes up space, (scientists call this “matter”). The science project will enable you to… 1. Ask questions 2. Observe and study something a. This is done in a variety of ways. Some of the most popular ways to study and observe something is by doing and experiment or watching it over a period of time. Another is looking up research that others have already done. 3. Sharing your findings with others The first part of your science project is to become curious. Attached to this sheet is a list of questions that a curious scientist might ask. Choose three questions that you would like to observe and study. Bring this paper back on __October 5____________. I have helpful experiments on each of these questions and I will send them home with you on ____October 6____, along with guidelines on how to set up the project. If you have other ideas for a science project- please write them on the back of this paper and send them in for me to check. Science Questions Find a science question that you would like to investigate or make one up with a parent. Choose three that you would like to observe and study. What can your pulse tell you about your heart? How can I make my heart beat sound louder? What happens to your lunch? Can I confuse my hands sensory receptors? Why is it hard to pick things up if my hands are cold? Why does food taste different when I am sick ? Do some parts of the body feel things better than others? What can you learn about spiders? What can you learn about worms? Is this an insect? Why can you grow a plant without dirt? Why can you grow miniplants on a piece of bread? What does mold grow best on…a sneeze, dirt, bread, or skin? How can you change a plant and make new one? What will rot? What will not? How do plants drink? How can things “change”? What kinds of changes can happen? Why does popcorn pop? How can salt and ice make icecream? Which freezes first, hot or cold water? How does jello work? What happens when you make it? You can make an egg bounce. How does this happen? You can make salt disappear and reappear. How does this happen? How do crystals work? How can you make a mixture shrink? Why is it possible to make disappearing ink? How do you make soda fizzy? How can gas molecules make a jet-propelled toy? Why can I make mothballs and raisins look like they are alive? Why can I make a gas, that has amazing strength? How can I polish pennies using chemistry? Why do banana’s turn brown? How can I store energy by training a can? How can a piece of paper be strong enough to hold a book? Why can I plunge a flimsy straw into a hard raw potato? How does inertia make eggs and pennies do strange things? How can I make a battery from a lemon? What interesting experiments can I do with light? How does heat travel? What can I learn about air by doing experiments? What is the difference between a stalagmite and a stalactite? How can I make it rain in my house? Science Project- Part II 1. Write down your science question in the box below. _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ Draw a picture of your science question in the box below 2. Explain what you learned about your project. Were you able to answer your science question? Tell about it. Draw conclusions, try to figure out what happened and why. Use the information above, in steps 1-3 to share what you have learned about your project to the class and others. Use drawings, take pictures of yourself and your project, as you do your experiment, to help others understand and learn about your project. Put this information on a display board that can be set up at the science fair. 5. You will also need to share your information with the class. Be prepared, (Practice reading and telling others about your project). You may also share your information with the class by .. a. b. c. d. e. f. recreating the experiment for the class let the class perform your experiment write about it dramatize it create a Power Point presentation video yourself share it any way you want to……make sure it is understandable. 6. Turn these papers in and be prepared to share your research on October _29____. Have Fun!!!!
