MATH ADVENTURE Q & A:
What is Math Adventure?
Math Adventure is a non-profit organization based in Bellevue that is dedicated to promoting
the thrill of learning in a friendly, non-competitive, engaging environment. They have offered
interactive events at local schools for the past eight years, and the PTA is excited to be
partnering with them again this coming spring to bring the next Adventure, based on Homer’s
The Odyssey, to IVE.
What happens during an Adventure?
Math Adventure is based on a fun interactive story where teams of 2nd-5th grade students, led
by their volunteer parent coach, work together to solve a series of math-oriented puzzles to
save the day. The event is not competitive and teams work at their own pace to complete the
set of puzzles. No winners are declared and a treat awaits everyone at the end. The goal is for
students to have fun while doing math!
Who can participate in the event?
The Adventure is designed for teams of 4 students of similar ability level. The puzzle topics align
more or less with what the students are learning in class, as well as Singapore Math’s “Primary
Math” curricula. Puzzle sets are offered for levels 2, 3, 4, and 5 and each team of four needs to
play the same level. A number of teams prepare for the event by meeting monthly or weekly to
practice their math skills and learn new topics. Meetings are entirely up to each individual
team’s parents and coach.
What are the eligibility requirements?
Each team of 4 students must provide its own parent coach who will chaperone the students
during the event (5:30-8:30 PM), as well as a second parent volunteer from each team to work
a station during the event (5:00-8:30 PM). Multiple teams cannot name the same volunteer,
nor can one team’s coach be another team’s coach or volunteer. The coach and the volunteer
also need to attend a training one night prior to the event. This is a volunteer intensive
program, and the more the merrier! Cost is $25 per student ($100 per team).
How do I get more information? How can I register?
IVE’s Math Adventure Coordinator Victoria Remer will be hosting a Parent Information Night on
Monday, November 16, 2015 from 7:00-8:00 PM in the IVE Library. It’s a great time to learn
more about the program, ask questions and begin to network with other parents. Registration
information will be available at that time and posted on the PTA website following the meeting.
