In pages 105 through 145 in the book, A Parent’ and Teachers’ Guide to Bilingualism,
Colin Baker discusses whether bilingual education is a benefit to bilingual students or not. She
discusses the different forms of bilingual education that are available to students. She also talks
about the benefits and disadvantages of bilingual education depending on whether the students
speak a majority or minority language.

In the article “Frist Teach Them English,” Diane Ravitch discussed the amount of money
that the government had put into bilingual education even though they had not seen many
positive outcomes. In the article, Ravitch talked about how students need to learn English but not
necessarily in school. The author concluded with the thought that all students do need to learn
English if they live in America, but they should be learning it outside of school where they use
their own money to pay for it.

The article “The State of the Art of Secondary ESL Teaching and Learning,” written by
Lee Gunderson, started with talking about the history of bilingual education. Gunderson went on
to discuss the statistics of dropout rates of bilingual students. In conclusion, Gunderson
wondered why the United States could send people to the moon, but could not simply fix the
graduation rates of bilingual students.

The article “Hispanic Families' Perspectives on using Bilingual Vocabulary Kit to
enhance their Prekindergarten Children's Vocabulary Development,” by Deborah Ceglowski et
al, was a research study that was done to test the effectiveness of English- Spanish vocabulary
kits for Spanish speaking families. It reported the parents’ opinions of the kits and how they were
helpful to their children. The research study also touched on how learning vocabulary at a young
age can help later with school achievement.

In the article “Effective Instruction for English Learners,” by Margarita Calderon et al,
the authors wrote about the increasing amount of bilingual/ non-English speaking students in our
public schools. The article discussed how half of our student our student population is not
proficient in English. They ended the article by coming up with some instructional strategies to
improve bilingual students education.

by Travis W. England, the author discussed the history of bilingual education and how it was
formed. England discussed the politics behind bilingual education, and the impact that politics
have on bilingual education. England also touched on the effectiveness of bilingual education in
the United States and other countries.
