Course Description
There are microbes that cause stubborn infections and are extremely difficult to eradicate with
conventional antibiotics. These bacteria arrange themselves into complex and tenacious
organisms that we call biofilms.
This course provides an orientation to the phenomenon of biofilms – what they are, why they
are a problem, and what can be done about them. It will help you as a practicing wound care
specialist to understand the role that biofilms play in chronic wound infections.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be better able to:







Define biofilm bacteria and related terms
Explain the origin of biofilm theory, including traditional views of bacteria
List the three stages of biofilm growth
List current methods of detection and treatment for biofilms, as well as methods in
development
Apply appropriate protocols for managing biofilms to clinical practice
Provide accurate and appropriate counsel as part of the treatment team.
Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families
Target Audience
This CME/CE initiative is designed to address the educational needs of physicians,
pharmacists, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved with the treatment
and management of patients with chronic wounds.
