The following information si important for you to know for your periodic muscle quizzes
throughout the school year. Knowing muscle anatomy and function is important; for
training and injury prevention and treatment.


Words DO NOT need to be spelle correctly, but it must be obvious phonetically
correct.
This quiz will count for about 25 pts. On your grade.
VOCABULARY WORDS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Anterior: front half of the body
Posterior: Rear half of the body
Upper Extremity: Muscles above the waist
Lower Extremity: Muscles below the waist
Muscles you must know

Pectorals ( upper Extremity/anterior) these are chest muscles/ You work your
pectorals when you do push -ups.

Deltoids: (Upper Extremity/Anterior or Posterior): These are the muscles that are on
the side of your upper arm/ Your deltoids are right under your trapezius muscle.

Trapezius (upper Extremity/Anterior) These are also known as your “traps”these are
on the very top of your shoulder. They connect your neck to your shoulder. You
actually work them when you shrug your shoulders.

Biceps ( UpperExtremity/ Anterior): These are in the fron t of your upper arm. Your
bicep is the muscle that gets big when you curl your arm in front of the mirror 
Triceps (Upper Extremity/Posterior): These are located directly behind
your bicep. You flex your tricep when you hold your arm straight and
tight.
Latissimus Dorsi (Upper Extremity/Posterior) : This is your HUGE, VSHAPED back muscle that runs from the top of your back near your neck
to your lower back above your gluteus.
Abdominals (Upper Extremity/Anterior): These are in the front of your
body, right above your waist and below your pectorals. Most middle school
kids know of the “abs” because this is where you see the “six pack”.
Lower Extremity
Illiotibial Band (IT Band) (Lower Extremity/Lateral): This runs along the side of your
leg from your hip to the side of your knee. It is not technically a muscle, but, it is close
enough to a muscle that most people call it a muscle.
Gluteus Maximus (Lower Extremity/Posterior): Three gluteal muscles that make up
the human buttocks. The Gluteus Maximus is the largest muscle in the human body
and also considered the strongest.
Quadraceps (Lower Extremity/Anterior): These are the huge muscles in the front of
your upper leg. These muscles connect to the front of your waist area. You can feel
them flex when you squeeze your leg tight and straight.
Hamstrings (Lower Extremity/Posterior): These are the muscles directly behind your
quadriceps on the back of your upper leg. You can feel you hamstrings flex when you
stand and bring your foot to your butt.
Gastrocnemius (Lower Extremity/Posterior): These are your “calf” muscles. You flex
your gastrocnemius when you step on your tip toes.

THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME OF THE FORMATS OF THE CLASS QUIZZES
1.I might stand in front of the class, point at a muscle on my body and you have to write it
down.
2.I might demonstrate a particular stretch and you have to identify the main muscle that it
stretches.
3.I might ask you to list a certain number of Upper Extremity and Lower Extremity muscles.
4.I might give you a multiple choice test and you pick the correct answer.
5.I might give a description of where the muscle is on the body and you have to name the
muscle.
6.I might give you a diagram as a handout and you have to label all the muscles that are
identified.
