MUSCLE QUIZ STUDY GUIDE WHY MUSCLES? The following information si important for you to know for your periodic muscle quizzes throughout the school year. Knowing muscle anatomy and function is important; for training and injury prevention and treatment. Words DO NOT need to be spelle correctly, but it must be obvious phonetically correct. VOCABULARY WORDS YOU NEED TO KNOW: Anterior: front half of the body Posterior: Rear half of the body Upper Extremity: Muscles above the waist Lower Extremity: Muscles below the waist Muscles you must know Pectorals ( upper Extremity/anterior) these are chest muscles/ You work your pectorals when you do push -ups. Deltoids: (Upper Extremity/Anterior or Posterior): These are the muscles that are on the side of your upper arm/ Your deltoids are right under your trapezius muscle. Trapezius (upper Extremity/Anterior) These are also known as your “traps”these are on the very top of your shoulder. They connect your neck to your shoulder. You actually work them when you shrug your shoulders. Biceps ( UpperExtremity/ Anterior): These are in the fron t of your upper arm. Your bicep is the muscle that gets big when you curl your arm in front of the mirror Triceps (Upper Extremity/Posterior): These are located directly behind your bicep. You flex your tricep when you hold your arm straight and tight. Latissimus Dorsi (Upper Extremity/Posterior) : This is your HUGE, VSHAPED back muscle that runs from the top of your back near your neck to your lower back above your gluteus. Abdominals (Upper Extremity/Anterior): These are in the front of your body, right above your waist and below your pectorals. Most middle school kids know of the “abs” because this is where you see the “six pack”. Lower Extremity Illiotibial Band (IT Band) (Lower Extremity/Lateral): This runs along the side of your leg from your hip to the side of your knee. It is not technically a muscle, but, it is close enough to a muscle that most people call it a muscle. Gluteus Maximus (Lower Extremity/Posterior): Three gluteal muscles that make up the human buttocks. The Gluteus Maximus is the largest muscle in the human body and also considered the strongest. Quadraceps (Lower Extremity/Anterior): These are the huge muscles in the front of your upper leg. These muscles connect to the front of your waist area. You can feel them flex when you squeeze your leg tight and straight. Hamstrings (Lower Extremity/Posterior): These are the muscles directly behind your quadriceps on the back of your upper leg. You can feel you hamstrings flex when you stand and bring your foot to your butt. Gastrocnemius (Lower Extremity/Posterior): These are your “calf” muscles.
